ya know what - I'm a dummy. The bass I was thinking of was one with the buckeye burl top, not the spalted maple:

Im sure it can be ordered with custom options. It is made to order afterall. JP mentioned that he can do it in any other finish. I thought of the trans blue option when i ordered mine but decided to go with tetsuya's specs. Im very very happy with the trans pink and gold hardware. Mine took a little longer because JP said there was a flaw in the original finish and they had to refinish the whole body. Note, the 55-69 comes stock with schaller strap locks :cool:

It looks like the recess isn't as deep on the 55-69, since it starts around the 20th/21st fret instead of near the end of the 22nd. Combined with the longer horn, that would be a deal breaker for me as I love the access on the 55-94/02. I can see where it wouldn't bother some folks though. It looks good though. I just love how easy it is to get your hand in all manner of contortions up in the high registers on Lakland's original design. It makes chording and such much easier.

I personally cant feel the difference accessing the upper notes because the cut away is still large. It sits better on my lap with the longer horn :p

I had a feeling that was the reason you couldnt get the -69 body shape but didnt wanna jump to conclusions :hiding:
Look forward to seeing the completed bass! I know the wait must be torturous!

I'm wondering if you've ever had the opportunity to compare that bass with a Stingray? If so, how did the tone, eq and playability compare?

I was recently reading a product profile in the September '97 Bass Player mag—and it definitely has me interested.

OK, I hate to do this (because I usually do my own research before posting questions), but I would like to get some feedback from folks who know Lakland.
I have an opportunity (if I act quickly enough) to pick up a used natural/rosewood Skyline 55-01 (it'll be my first 5-string bass). It's only a couple of years old and in good shape.

Should I expect something similar to a G&L L2K, or perhaps something warmer? I wanted a Peavey Axcelerator 5, but I can't find one that floats my boat just yet. I play mostly classic rock, hard rock & blues - all finger style.

I've heard great things about Lakland and am wondering if the Skyline 55-01 was a good entry.

i haven't played a 55-01 but it would be wise to try and play one beforehand.
everyone has different opinions but to me the lakland skylines feel great and are very good basses.
my skyline 55-02 felt just as light as my USA lakland.

Not at all. It's more like a hyped up Jazz bass sound that's loaded with HC pickups. The active electronics and hum cancelling pickups give it lots of depth, with a great deal of clarity in the mids and highs.

I'd say no, not warmer, at least not in an organic sense. There will be deeper lows, higher highs, etc on the 55-01. It's a good sound, if that's what you like and are after.

Check out these official 44-01 clips for a good idea of the tone.

Thanks, guys, and I appreciate the link to the sound clips of the 44-01.
It's funny, I'm fairly new to bass and I didn't want to use terms that aren't relevant, but "organically warm" almost describes my favorite bass tone to a tee.
I use a MXR M80 "color" feature to warm up almost everything I play through it.

I'll keep looking around and playing what I can get my hands on.
I appreciate the quick responses.

A 55-02 might be more up your alley. They cost more, but the electronics are excellent and versatile. Check out the soundclips on Lakland's site.:)

I would agree with this, except that I find a 55-01 might be a better platform for modding if the sound isn't exactly what he wants. I'd swap out the pups and pre in a Montreal minute if I had a 55-01 I wasn't over the moon about. The extra price and higher-end electronics in a 55-02 would make me stop and think twice.
