Whether it's paint or a thin layer of plastic does it make a difference?

I think, at least on the transparent finish ones, it's paint. You can clearly see the quartersawn grain, which wouldn't be the case if it was overlain with plastic.

I'd be willing to bet that the headstocks on Decades and Hollow bods are the same lam finishes.

Yep, I'm sure it could. I am actually amazed that Lakland was doing that. I wonder if that is how all of their painted headstocks are.

Well I know that my US Decade has a painted HS and it is paint.
It was painted my pat wilkins for Ian Allison who ordered it this way.

These are great basses!
Liked them so much I owned the same one twice, then had a US BG built based on this config.
I had no idea it was not paint, if anything, the headstock gave me the impression of a luxuriously thick coat of paint - looked sharp, no idea it was a laminate, nor would that have been an issue for me at all. doesn't feel like a "cost cutting short cut ".
If the lam is back in place and glued tight, whats the issue?

This batch of basses was special!

I would have guessed that a matching HS is painted to match the bass.
Just was alarming when I heard this earlier.
Wanted to ask if anyone else had.
Wanted to get the facts on it..
guess I did.
Most likely will pick one of these up.
Curious how one DStar sounds in a solid body.
I already know what 2 DStars sound like in a HB application.

It would make a difference to me, if I were buying a US lakland. And paying US asking prices for it.
But for a used Skyline at the $1,200 range or less. As long as the darkstar is in it and the neck and board kick butt I am fine with a laminate HS piece.

My US Laklands with matching headstock are both painted.
The US Decade and the US HB.

Yup. Well, it is their more affordable line, so there are bound to be some differences. I think the more pressing question is which is better for the tone of the bass...laminate or paint?

Pat is going to get my Decade neck this week to strip the headstock. I sent him a message to let me know if he finds out it's a laminate piece. I will bet you there is a good chance it is.

Now I recall ya said you were sending the Decade out to get it a natural wood headstock, rather than the black.

Take off the plastic laminate thing.
Paint the wooden headstock to match red.
Park a white pearloid pickguard on it...hmmm? would look killer with the white blocks.

Lol! Black laminate is definitely better for metal.
