I'm going to be the 'oddball' and suggest playing with the MK1 pickups for a while before modding right off the bat. You may find that you really like them after you play them for a while. I've never found a reason to change the pickups or the pre in my -01 series basses (and I have 4 of them). The NTMB will be a bit smoother and have a different 'voice', but the MK1 pickups are not bad at all.

This what I have decided to do at least for now. I heard some clips of the Chi's and loved them. I just can't justify the additional funds now. I talked the guys at Hanson and they have about a 3 week turn around for the MK1 5 string versions. I'm going to try it like it is for a few gigs and see what happens. I just sold a 44-01 that was stock and didn't have a problem
with the sound. I'll see how the Bart works out first.

I've had a set on for a little over a month, and they do seem to have slackened up a bit since then. Still bright, but not as taught. About on par with the GHS Boomers, Rotosound Nexus and DR Dragonskin strings I have on my other basses - gauges 45-105.

Thanks BB... I'll stick it out with em and see how they feel. I'll give them a good work out over the weekend tightening up tunes for the sub gig I'm doing. Hopefully that loosens em up a little.

I believe it has become LOG 'custom' to unleash the dreaded word whenever things slow down at the club.

The other C word being referred to is not as big a problem

Thank you. She's been quite the spitfire through it. She told no one until the day of the surgery and then only because the doctor made her. And after she was out of surgery, she wanted everyone to know about her bodacious new tatas.

I found this Skyline 44-64 used while surfing Kijiji. It's my first Lakland, and I have a feeling she's a keeper, although I think there may be a lindy fralin pickup in her future.

been to San Fran and Cinncy in the past few days...know what being a traveller is like!

Played my new-to-me fretless 55-94 with my band last night. It sounded absolutely amazing however... not going to lie here... it was a bit of a bear to play in tune. I've been shedding pretty hard on it for the week I've had it but apparently I have been subtly leaning over it to see where I'm at. Can't do that so much standing with a proper strap and looking at my bandmates for cues or watching the drummer. Oh well, it will get better and I'm loving the sound and feel of the bass. I think it's a keeper.

always easier when you can peek...you know there is NOTHING wrong with sitting on a stool when you go tot he fretless...I ahve seen a few "pros" do this....also, makes the audience wonder what you are up to!!!

I usually play sitting (I play in a church Praise and Worship band) but have taken to standing up more and more (because the guitarists do!)...but usually sit when I get the freltess out...it will come young Jedi!!!! Practice...practice..practice...

Another reason to sit while playing fretless, it makes playing with the neck at a higher angle easier which I have found helps with playing in tune.

Hey guys I'm the proud to say that I just picked up a Lakland 55-01 from a fellow TB'er. The MK1 pre has been replaced with a Bart NTMB pre. The original MK1 pickups are still in. Any suggestions for replacement pickups. I was thinking US Barts or Hanson Chi-Sonic's.

I would say go with the CHIs..I have a 55-07 (55-94 with CHIs) and LOVE it to death!

I believe Hanson has drop in chisonics for that bass now.

I sent my 2007 55-02D back to Lakland last week because the sound was not right. Leo called me a few minutes ago, they replaced the preamp and harness, FREE OF CHARGE!!! It's shipping out today! What a company! performing warranty work on a 5 year old bass that I bought second hand. How can you not like this brand?

any time Tex!!!!! Lakland definitely puts the "C" in Customer service! that is the BEST thing about them...their basses are GREAT but the CS is better...hard to beleive...

that is why all of my lectrics are Lakies (and ALL basses would be IF they made acoustics!)

As already suggested, you've got a few different ways you can go with this, and all of them are good. It depends what you're after tonally. My guess is the Nordy pickups will be the most aggressive-sounding, the US Barts will probably be the smoothest, and the Chis will be in between but towards the growly side. Perhaps someone has experience with all three? I've only had the Chis.

Greg has it nailed.....chose based on your sound preference....CHIs are growly and gnarly (but they can "boom" if you want ehm to!)!

So I slapped a set of EB Cobalt Slinkies (50-105) on my 4-94 over the weekend and tried them out in a full band context last night at a rehearsal with a cover band I'm subbing for.

The sound is pretty darn good - I was copping some great roundwound tones. For example, we did "Walk this Way" by Aerosmith and I was able to replicate that growl almost perfectly that you hear on the recording by favoring the front pickup. Sound-wise, they're in between nickel and steel strings IMO. Good brightness, but not overly zingy. I imagine they'll sound even better to my ear once they die a bit.

My only complaint is the tension. The strings are way tighter than I like. My truss rod is maxed out to get the relief in the neck where I like it and they feel stupid taut.

Anyone who used or uses Cobalts - do they slacken up a little bit in time or do they stay tight like this for the life of the string? It might be a deal breaker for me, which is sad to say because I like the sound.

hmmmm....pretty tight huh? I am looking for "slinkier" strings lately....

Interesting...I was thinking about trying them. I don't like high tension either though:-/

...I am with ya....used to be into higher tension BUT I cannot go as fast or eay with them...need medium tension really...still want some feel to them...

About what Nat has experienced, I'd say equal to a broken in set of steels.

Just took my new to me US Glaub to a renowned Baltimore luthier (Phil Jacoby - highly recommended BTW). I just wanted an opinion on set up and all that. He was blown away by the quality. Man, I am so glad I got this Glaub. It's a lifer!

Guys - I've got the Jazz tapered 44-64 and dot inlays. I am calling it a Glaub, bit is actually a DD if I have the jazz taper?

Just buy as new or mint gear....keep it that way and then sell it for fair pricing. Simple.

I have them on one of my non-Laklands. They've been on about a month and gotten about an hour of play a day on average. They still sound bright and hold the sustain, but the tension loosened up some. I love the sound, but struggled with the tension early. For style comparison - I'm a beginner player doing mostly technique exercises, scale drills, and classic rock songs. No slap, pop, or super jazzy fun to watch OMG how did they do THAT playing for me.
