Lakland used various pickups from many manufacturers during its 14 some-odd years, before their sister organization, Hanson pickups started making in-house pickups and pre-amps exclusively. Some people really dig the Fralins, and I agree they are very vintage sounding, if that's what you're after. The move to inhouse pickups phased in from roughly 2006-2008, depending on the model. I'm by no means a Lakland historian.

Early JOs can be found with Aeros, and maybe Lindy Fralins (not sure on that last one)
Early BGs and DDs can be found with Lindy Fralin vintage pickups or occasionally Darkstar pickups.
Early 4-94/44-02s have Bartolini pups and pre's
Early Decades have Bartolinis, Darkstars

Of course, you will find many mods out there with all sorts of stuff in the wild.

Others here probably know the more intricate details, and can correct any errors. This is what I have gleaned from hanging out here for a while.

I want to say it was 2007/2008 when the switch happened....the "new" pickups are Hansons "in house" brand unless otherwise requested....

the new vintage series pickups sound very "fralin like"...

Thanks. I figured it would all be on the Lakland Wiki, but it's not... it seems like the answer is "it depends."

I saw the foo fighters back and forth dvd on cable, and the bassist was using a couple lakland basses. Where do these basses sale at? And what's the cheapest one? Is there one in the $300 range....

I have a 2006, 4-94 that was one of the first Laklands with Lakland pickups and pre to go out the door.


One of the first Laklands equipped with Lakland electronics went to bass player mag in 05 for a review.

Not usually on even a Skyline, usually even the overseas Skylines are around the $750-1k range. USA ones are double that, basically. I think the bassist for the Foo's has a Bob Glaub type model, great bass and if you find one for $300 range, grab it. Best of luck!

Wow. I love eBay (sometimes). For months I have been watching a brand new red/maple, passive 55-94 (vol/vol/tone with Chisonics). It had been listed at 3300 but occasionally went down to 2750. It's the exact bass I am looking for except for body color. I called and got the weight (under 9 lbs-check) and they said it was their last USA Lakland and they were only carrying Skylines going forward. I offered 2500 and they said they could not sell for under 3300 and the eBay price of 2750 was an error. I kept watching....back and 4th between 2750 and 3300 until......2200 and now listed as a display model. I bid the 2200 but didn't hang around for the last few hours of the auction and it sold to someone else for 2375........until my 2nd offer came through this am for 2200 :-) SOLD. I can't wait! At that price, even if I have it repainted (not sure I will) by local master Michel Fournel, it's still a bargoon. Sonic blue/white 'guard would really be the ticket....
