The difference is minimal as far as fret spread. I've played shorter scales (Rics and Gibson style) all the way up to fanned fret Dingwalls w/ 37" B strings... maybe that makes me feel more adaptable as opposed to someone who plays the same bass for years and years :D.

I recommend you play with string gauges on 35 (and even 34 scale basses). Most sets of strings aren't balanced outta the pack and have much tighter D and G strings. 35" 5ers play so much easier when the strings feel balanced in tension IMO. This was discussed earlier in this thread when the new D'addario balanced sets came up.

Got my new 55-64 yesterday from Bass Central via FedEx. Played it in church this morning. Awesome! I can't wait to crank it up with my blues band. ImageUploadedByTalkBass1361732633.284264.jpg

Just took delivery of a 55-02, courtesy of Amazon's bizarre, yet irresistible pricing strategy. I love the 35in scale and the B is pretty impressive. Maybe this will take over from the Cirrus as my main gigging bass? Anyway - I was surprised that Lakland don't supply cases, even gig-bags with their basses. What do people out there use as hard case? I saw an SKB for 165 on Sweetwater, but I'm not a big fan of SKB - any other options?

I use SKB Freedom and Gator molded cases. Both fit well. You can get a Lakland case from Bass Central for around $135.

I agree, they should come with cases...but that is a can of worms you don't want to open..

2) yes, for me.

First, if you compare import (Skyline) necks to import (Squire) necks, there really is no comparison. Skyline necks are as good as MIA Fender necks (IMO). Squire necks are so inconsistent its not even a fair comparison.

So to compare MIA Fender and MIA Lakland necks, to me, its the:

difference between a baseball bat and something that feels like it was made for your hand to caress.

difference between assembly line vs. custom shop

difference between an acquaintance and an intimate friend

you get the picture?

Get one, play one, and you'll notice a difference (I did).

Otherwise, go thru 60+ threads looking for love for the Lakland necks on here, and about 100 threads on the LOG.

I've posted this pic before so excuse the repetition, but I'm just checking in to report that this LOG P 5 has become my main player. What a versatile bass. Wherever you play on that neck it sounds good. And I like the string spacing.

The guy I traded with to get this bass (a TBer) had it strung with rounds. I've left them on. Although I have flats on my other Ps, I'm finding that rounds sound very good on this bass along with the P configuration pickups.

These are my opinions based on owning about 20 Laklands (about half import, half US). US Lakland necks feel/play better than any others. I've not had what I'd call great experience with Skyline necks. Luckily, Lakland will fix any issues or problems. My US and MIJ Fenders' necks have played better than 3/4 of the Skylines I've owned.... w/ 2 or 3 Skylines being equal in playability. I've yet to be thrilled w/ a MIM Fender or Squiers, although a buddy has a very impressive Squier P.

One other comment on the necks. I'd put my Skyline neck against ANY Squier or MIM neck I've every played. I can also favorably compare it to the 2 or 3 MIA's and MIJ's I've played. Only had one MIJ neck that played better than this Skyline. (Wish I'd never sold that MIJ!!!)

My neck on my 55-02 from 2003 is really a great neck. You get a good one and it will beat almost anything out there. Go play a few decide for yourself, you won't be disappointed.
