There are fretless JO 5ers BUT NOT DJ5ers. (I have a Skyline JO5 fretless).

there was ONE US DJ 4 freltess manufactured which was uber cool...there are pics floating around somewhere...

it was natural with an ebony board and wood blocks..no binding.

The binding makes defretting a DJ almost impossible (trust me...I have asked...mmore than once).

to be honest, I am not sure a std Skyline fretless neck would fit a DJ pocket....they are "different"

you can get a JO5 and buy a fretless neck (lined ebony) from lakland or look around...they do show up at times...but not often.

if you save up anough you can always order a US Lakie DJ 5er....being "poor" that can take time...but it would be worth it!!!

Stay warm? Yeah right? It was freakin cold for Florida...like 50-60 with wind.
But better than NY....10-20 with wind. lol

Yeah not a fan of the MMiller steels.
I just am a nickle player I guess.
Stick with what I KNOW I like and save the $$$ trying all the other stuff.

A general question for the LOG folks: how are you coping with the 35" scale length?

For a while now I've been looking for a 5 string Jazz bass to bring into the fold. And one of the models I've had my eye on was a Joe Osborn Skyline 5 string. Today I finally got around to giving one a test drive. It was an NOS 55-60 from the time when the Skyline's were still made in Korea. The pickups were the Lindy Fralin's, and this particular bass was 3TSB with a rosewood board. With the exception of the finish, this is a bass I could have totally seen myself playing.

Then I got around to playing the bass. And I was really surprised that I took notice of how the 35" scale length made my left hand technique feel "OFF". Mind you, I had some experience with a 35" scale length 6 string bass (a Modulus), but I traded that bass years ago, and I've been playing 34" scale length instruments as my main basses since about 1999. Has anyone else felt that the scale length has been a source of potential disorientation?

I have tried both 35" and 34" fivers.
Generally, I don't have a problem with the extra reach/stretch required on the 35".
I found that the width of the neck was much harder for me to get my head around, than the extra inch of scale.
And remember, if you get it in your head that that 1" is spread over the span of the nut to bridge, maybe it won't psyche you out so much.

Other bass manufacturers offer both 34" and 35" five strings, Lakland only offers 35" as they feel that provides a better B string.

Like you, I felt a small difference. But... I decided and rationalized the fact that the 1 inch difference in total string length translated into such a miniscule amount of distance added per fret, that any slight adjustment to that difference should be automatic. It really was nothing to fret over. :D

I use a plastic pry tool that you can get for taking apart electronics, etc. Just want to make sure it has a "bend" near the pry end so you get some leverage and work your way around the underside of the knob evenly. I also put a thin towel in between the tool and finish.
