To be clear, a lot of it, as Gary said, is a kind of nostalgia. Also, the early ones with maple boards were made at a time when birdseye was easier to get, so they tend to have a lot more of it.

The early JOs do seem to have some kind of extra mojo about them, but I can't really define it. The Fralin J pickups capture that old-school J vibe better than the Lakland/Hansons, IMO. The latter has a little more of a modern vibe.

Overall, though, I think the US Laklands being made today are as good as they've ever made. My 2011 Glaub is incredible.

Thanks, The birdseye on this one is tremendous. I have never played a US JO, so I would probably not know the difference, but when I talked to Brian at Lakland about it he made a big deal about it being "an old one." Its just funny for me to think about something from 2000 as "old," Haha.

I'm afraid it may be twisted. I just want to know if this can be fixed with a few turns of the truss rod, or if this thing is going to need a new neck. NEW NECK. Truss tweaks won't fix this. Unfortunately this happens with skylines sometimes. It's happened to me and is not as uncommon as it should be. Get a new neck bro.

I'd like to officially invite a welcome for me back into Laklandia.

I will be modding these.

The DJ will get a paint job(ice Blue),fralins and a redeamer circuit,the lolli tuners off the Glaub.

The Glaub/ Fralins and the clovers off the DJ.

If you are getting buzzing, give it a good setup. If the setup does nothing for the buzzing or improving the action then you will most likely need a new neck. It's hard to judge from the pics, but it looks SEVERELY twisted. If you do call Lakland, ask if they have any NOS or B Stock necks. It will save you a good bit of money and, at least in my case, I got a flawless PLEK'd neck. If you can do the install it will be even cheaper because you don't have to ship the bass/body and pay them to do it.

Used to be an option for 55-01s. I bought it directly from Lakland about 10 years ago. They were made by Jeannie's Pickguards, so they may still be available from them.

I guess its somewhat like early Fenders, early Gibsons, early whatever. Again, not my opinion, just sharing what I have heard from others.

I agree on the relic mojo...really not my thing....cannot see myself ever buying a "new relic"....someday (???) I would like a mid-60s Fender P...but again, I want one in good condition so that means major $$$$ or a refin....(sacrilige I know!)
