I just don't understand the super high values on vintage instruments. I understand the sentimentality, but I don't see the wisdom of paying 2-3x a bass like a US Lakland. I suppose it's perceived value, but they're not craftsman pieces the way a Fodera or Elrick us. If there was a guaranteed return on investment down the road, fine, but everyone used to say houses always increase in value: Enter 2008

My main fear, is if it starts to break down (neck warp, electronics...who knows?) then it's hosed.

Only if you bought it to sell it later. If you bought it for sentimental reasons, you're not completely hoses. If a neck hasn't warped in 46 years, it's not going to suddenly spring unless it's exposed to extremes consistently. Electronics are easily fixed too.

Would your opinion differ on a classic muscle car vs a new muscle car? There is something in the fact that they are scarce and difficult to find. However, I do believe the value increases a few years back was totally unwaranted. I mean, people were even spending huge sums on 70s Fenders, not exactly the epitome of craftsmanship.

No, my opinion doesn't change. It's the same scenario. I would argue, though, that the muscle cars of today are the super exotics, not the same brands.

I lol'ed as I shipped them. I mean, it was fun and felt good to do! :D
I will clean my room promise, and from there I will clean each one of the family basses!! I will have to as my grubby paw prints and drool will be all over them :rollno:

Not to get too far off base, but a '69 Camaro won't handle as well, accelerate as well, get as good of gas milage or be any where near as reliable as a '13 Camaro. I wouldn't make the same car to bass comparison at all, and certainly don't think a vintage to MIM comparison is even close. I'd say the comparison would be more like a vintage Fender to a perfectly set up Custom Shop, Mike Lull, Lakland , Sadowsky, or similar bass. But, that's just my take on it. :)

That said, I'd gladly own either era of bass or car, but make the car a Mustang, instead. ;)

I guess the only way to complete an analogy like this would be to remove the monetary element. Assuming that Vintage Fenders and Fender CS (or other boutique) are substitute goods, which would you prefer? If more people say vintage and there are less of them (and no more production) they become more desired, thus driving up their presumed value to the consumer. I can order a Lakland tomorrow and have it in 6 months, I can't just order a 66 Jazz bass, at least not a real one.

It's not good to drool on the basses. Drool is bad for the electronics and the strings. But IME, basses really love a good fondle.
