I dig it.

I oiled the back of the neck, let it dry for a bit, and then applied the wax. I didn't use a whole lot of wax (maybe a quarter-sized dollop). I let it dry for 5 minutes (Lakland website says 5 min, Howard's says 20 min), and wiped off the excess. I let it sit for another 15-20 minutes and then oiled the fretboard. After another 15-20, I strung it up and well...

It feels like the day I got it. Fast, smooth, and 100% awesome. I could see myself doing this to all of my laklands once every year or two. To clarify, I didn't have any issues with the neck as it was - I was just curious.

I think, if you want your bass to feel new again, go for it. If your neck feels like an old friend: leave it.

I think I'll definitely do this to any incoming (used) basses I get, and then wear it in myself.

Q. What recommendations do you have for maintaining the neck on my US made Lakland bass?

A. The back of the neck is a hand rubbed oil finish with a thin wax coating. We recommend occasionally cleaning the neck with pure orange oil and reapplying a coating of clear paste wax or bowling alley wax. After applying the wax, allow to dry for five minutes then wipe off the excess. The wax can be scuffed with fine steel wool to produce a satin finish or polished to a dull luster depending on your preference. Avoid cleaners and polishes that contain added thinners or silicone.

We also recommend orange oil for cleaning the fingerboards. The maple fingerboard does not require any sealer after cleaning. We recommend Howard Brand Feed N Wax after cleaning for our rosewood and ebony fingerboards.

Dan to the rescue...
So it would appear the Scotch Brite is not for removal of the existing finish, but for treating the wax coating to your desired texture. I suppose if I were to do this to either of my instruments, I would use the 1200 grit paper first, orange oil, then feed n wax, followed by a quick, light Scotch Brite pass.

Looks like I'll be visiting Ace tonight!

I have done it thrice, but with no wax at the end. I think the orange oil and scotch brite makes the neck ultra smooth. I guess the wax would seal it though. I have never done it with a Skyline though. I had a Skyline DD that I liked quite a bit, but I sold it to buy the US Glaub. I think that the smooth satin neck finish is a definite selling point on the skylines though.

Also, as far as being an infidel, I have lots of basses, and you wil notice that I said I ordered the other bass in January. I didn't even get my first Lakland until well after that order was placed. I want to buy another US Lakland, but I have quite a bit of $$ tied up in that custom order (which was supposed to be my grad-school graduation present to myself).

If I were to order a custom Lakland, I would probably order a 44-64 PJ with the 1.75 nut. For some reason I really prefer that neck profile to the 1.5, but I also hear that the 1.6 Lakland neck is to die for.

That was a lot of neck talk... I need a nap. :o

Just giving you a hard time!

I took love the 1.75 lakland neck profile! It is killer and VERY comfortable!

The 1.6 is nice as well but.....I still like the 5er necks best!

Every time I pick up my DJ5, I'm amazed at how comfortable the neck is. If I do this treatment, I think I'll keep the DJ5 untouched, unless of course it's a huge difference on the 44-64

I'll be trying it later. I went and bought the Howards stuff over lunch.

I use 0000 steel wool on the backs of my necks. It keeps them silky smooth. The oil/ wax treatment will be an interesting experiment.

I want to buy a 5 string, but I really do not have much use for it, unless I strung it E-C and played a bunch of fancy solo-stuff that no one cares about on it.

Also, my point about the January order is that I am pretty dissapointed that the instrument manufacturer has taken this long. I honestly believe that the order was somehow overlooked by someone until I called about it.

Nah, they are just soaking the wood in Unicorn milk and Pixie tears for another 4 months to make it extra groovy. The actual manufacturing will only take about a day and will be done over night by luthier gnomes.:D

Mr. Quick made a delivery today...time to try them out on the 44-64..
