Well, I think lpcarter should pick whatever he likes best. I'm just offering some quick visual help with what a 55 P guard would look like on the bass.

Once you get used to it you will wonder how you did without it......
Many many different sound combos
You can even change the mid frequency in the cavity.....I typically do not fool with that but many do

Yeah I have been messing around with that..I have it set at 5oo hz for now..seems to be working out pretty well.
I'm pretty excited to be a Lakland owner once again. I had a local TB friend agree to sell me his 1998 5594 deluxe. I'll post better pics when I get a chance to take some, here's one from my gig this past Friday.
The neck is flamed, the fret board is birdseye and the top is one of the nicest quilts I have ever seen. It has the "old" Barts, no battery box and weighs about 9lbs. It killed at the gig and I could not be happier!

So courtesy of one of Tyler's classifieds, I learned that Curtis Novak is making his version of the Darkstar pups. The price is reasonable IF the pickup is as much of a bruiser as the Hammond Darkstars. This would get installed into my 44-64, so I would need it routed out.
My question to you wonderful people is this: does anyone here have any experience with Curtis' new pup?

No first hand experience, but if I go the DS route (pun..) for my Duck Dunn, my plan is to try out one from Curtis.

Thanks Dan, I read through it and didn't really find an answer to my question. Lots of useless arguing about cost mixed with lots of praise for Curtis' work. The newer Novak pups appear to have a coil tap which would let you throw a switch to get the Hammond (6k) or Starfire (13k) sound. Sounds awesome.
Yeah, that coil tap is interesting, just to have another tonal option.
I'm also considering his "Charlie Christian" P pickup since it seems that it would be a pretty unique P sound without requiring routing: Invalid Link Removed
If you do I'm sure we would all love an A/B review, and sound clips would be awesome too!
Originally picked up a 55-02 Deluxe but decided my 55-01 plays way better so I traded for this! Gonna do some upgrading to the electronics. Stock is noisy and output not very high.
