Right after I bought my US Lakland Osborn bass (alder/rosewood/passive), I was at a music store in NY and I tried out a $3k Fender CS J-bass. As great as it was, I have to say I really REALLY like the Lakland better. The neck shape, the way the pots feel, the tone, the way it balances, and just the overall feel of the instrument. It's more "top shelf".

Pot feel!!!!! Always a "thing" for me. Laklands have that slightly heavier twist that just feels like quality!

I have 2 CS Fenders and way more US Laklands... It's no question in my mind. Lakland is far better on many levels, but CS fender gives you a few things Lakland doesn't.

For instance, a finished neck. (But why?!) different neck shapes (but compared to Lakland...again, why) as well as many other nuances big and small. Just depends on what you're looking for! If you're looking for BEST, look no further.

And as far a s 5ers goes, there's the scale length issue. IMHE 35 just plain sounds and plays better....and yes I have owned 34" Sadowsky 5ers (more than 1). I understand that 34" is more comfy for many, but pluck a double stop involving the B and E strings and the improved clarity of 35" rings through. To ME, this matters, as does the higher tension ( for any given string gauge) the extra inch allows.

Totally agree...I've had 34", 34-1/2" and 35"

No B string can touch a 35"...IME and few actually feel/sound better than my 55-94

This is one of the reasons I've wanted to try out a Dingwall...you get a 37" scale B string and it works it's way down to a 34" scale on the G.
