tru-oil works too, but as you know (maybe others don't), tru-oil leaves behind a harder finish, more like lacquer or varnish. And you would not want (again for other's benefit) to mix these two "finishes" at the same time, end up with a sticky mess if you do.
My fave finish for non-maple fretboards and all other exposed wood is REAL lemon oil. I am not talking about crappy furniture polish that "contains" lemon oil, but the 100% pure stuff that is harder to find and far more expensive. It is non- greasy, absorbs supremely well, protects optimally and smells great. It was recommended to me by a prominent Montreal luthier (Michel Fournel) when he was dating my sister-in-law. He has built customs for Alain Caron and Cirque Du Soleil, among others and I take all my work to his shop.
Yes that would get messy... I like Tru oil because it's something more natural feeling than the satin poly, and it was something that I was familiar with. It's easy to pick up a bottle at several stores near me as well... I've got a bass on it's way that I may do "THE" treatment on so I can A/B them...
maybe i'll even record some samples so we can try and guess which was the tru-oil and which was the howard's

It really is amazing. I have been using it for 10 years and my friend (M Fournel) for about 30+ years.
steel wool or 1600 sandpaper...either or on my US necks. The 1600 seems a little more aggressive but not by much, not to my eye.
The 44-14 is a new "no frills" American model. No exotic tops, etc. other than that, same as the 44-94 in electronics.
Choices. The 44-14 has two or three color selections only. You can't get deluxe tops, and you can't get the CS pups, and you don't get the luscious BEM boards.

You may be able to find a good quality used US 4-94 in the classifieds at or less than the price of the 44-14. It may take patience, but they're out there
How would you guys compare a Fender CS 64 jazz NOS to the JO I ordered? Build quality and sound of course.....Because it essentially came down to those 2 for the j bass I wanted....They were pretty close in price

Well, I still don't know what you mean by "standard pre" on the US JO. The standard is passive with concentric knobs.
To answer your question, my US JO is the best J bass of any brand, including Fender CS, I've ever played. The feel of the neck is to die for. If you went passive and want a little more active punch, do it with your amp or a simple boost pedal like the Markbass Miniboost.
FYI, since they wouldn't build a USA DJ5 I just got a new 5594 from Bass Sanctuary and whoever is now building these puppies hit this one out of the park. Not only does it sound great and have uber top shelf fit and finish....but they finally get that light is right. 8.2 lbs with flawless balance and amazing feel. The resonance of the body keeps me grinning as much as the tone. Amazing.
Yes it is, and I'm curious as well what he's referring to. Still, he could drop in an Audere or a J-Retro
I asked Lakland if they would build a USA DJ5 and was told "it has been discussed in the past but we have no plans to offer one in 2014". I am wondering if anyone (besides little old me) would be interested enough in one of these to put down deposit $$. If we had 10 interested parties maybe they'd reconsider? I am sure it'd be pricey but I am willing. If anyone else feels likewise pm me. If I can get 10 serious orders I'll work on convincing 'em.
Oh sorry....what I mean by that is passive version....no upgrade to J retro or anything...
Excellent, congrats! With one exception, I believe the shop crew today is made up of guys who were working there the first time I visited Lakland 7 years ago. Despite the sale by Dan, there's been tremendous continuity there.
