I don't normally post them all at once as it's a little (ok, a LOT) gluttonous. I really should consider selling some of them off if I didn't actually play them all.
Interestingly, while I have sold a couple four-string Laklands, I've only sold one five string. A Korean 55-02 with Bartolini's in cherry burst with maple neck which I sold to begin the hunt for the 55-94 in similar garb.
One day, I hope to own a USA Lakland - in Canada, they rarely pop up on the used market (I have never seen one) and the exchange rate + duties/taxes, makes buying a new one unapproachable at $8000 CDN + for something special. Reverb after the exchange rate + taxes is better, but still a hard hit. Should anyone want to unload such a bass in the future to this Canadian LOG, put me on your list!
Any 44-01 owners here? Curious about how it stacks up against the sound of the DJ5 or the 44-64. I've not had a chance to try a Lakland active bass, so interesting to see what you all think. The price is quite a bit cheaper. What's it lacking?
I have a 44-01, but mine is modified with a different pre and pups. Night and day diff between a 44-01 and the other two Lakies you mentioned, both of which are passive. The standard 44-01 has a preamp with a pull bypass for the EQ but the battery is still on if my memory serves me correctly. The bass will not work in passive mode if the battery is dead. Many other basses will work in passive even with a dead battery.
The 44-01 even with the standard pre and pups STILL sounds very good. I just chose to change the electronics. The neck is so comfortable and is my favorite profile like the 44-02./ 44/94.

That is gorgeous! I like the transparent orange and that quilt is just stunning! And the BEM fretboard is exquisite. I’m happy to own one of the older ones as they don’t make ‘em quite like that anymore.

And I’ll play too- I don’t know how they sold any rosewood fingerboards in those days 
String change time for my '99 55-94 so I finally polished the "patina" off the frets while I was at it. It's a job that's been on my to-do list since I bought it last year...it just sounded so good I didn't want to mess with it.
Looks like the previous owned logged some hours in the money zone...
The bridge also had some corrosion going on so that got polished up as best as I could.
Back in business! I put some Super Slinkies on it this time. I like it so far...nice match for a brighter more aggressive tone.

Sometimes the new(er) basses need lots of tape and steel wool, as well as a full level job.

I talked with John when I was at the Lākland shop last summer. He was telling me it’s getting harder and harder for them to find good birdseye maple for fingerboards. He even mentioned it maybe becoming optional and standard maple being offered on US series basses as standard, probably for the same additional cost as ebony.
