Time for some new strings for my 55-02 - want to try steel - many like DR hi-beams - my questions are: what scale length is needed for through body? I see many long scale are around 36 1/2" - which would be too short. Also, have any of you gone lighter gage? I think 45-128 came stock..

Hi Beams will string thru body with no problem. Winding length is 37 3/4". They are my preferred string on my 55-14.

I happen to have one That meets your specifications but it's not going anywhere.
If you are looking for a thin neck and a 5-string Lakland you are not going to find it.
All Lakland five strings have the same neck essentially..... I find them very comfortable.
Didn't know they we're making a Ben Kenny signature. That is very interesting. Must be the first signature bass they have.
It would have been much cooler if Ben would have signed it. That being said having John sign it is pretty cool
Well, I really didn't expect this previous post to make one's dreams come true, so quickly. Not long after, a few great LOG members reached out to me with some generous offerings and willingness to ship to Canada; I was taken aback and thought how great this group is! Long story short, bass aficionado and veteran LOG member and most excellent human being Jeff Roller stepped up to offer his "Carlo". Many of you know Jeff and this bass well - I was amazed and grateful for having this opportunity, and Jeff's willingness to deal with all the potential complications and challenges that comes with shipping such a unique item to Canada. It arrived safe and sound day before last, it's a very special instrument to own and play, such a beautifully crafted and specially made instrument - something I would likely never come across in these parts. It would not have happened without Jeff's continuous communication and support, generosity and just plain willingness to ensure I was happy with all - what a stand up guy! Was that a long story made short? it is for us French Canadians, ask Jeff! Anyhow, enough chatter, here are some pics:

I literally missed this bass immediately, but no regrets, it is a superior instrument that is in the best home I could ask for! I know it shouldn't matter, but it does, whenever I part with an instrument it's like interviewing foster parents lol. I know it's in a very good home and I'm so happy knowing it is with JB being played and enjoyed!
You literally get to know someone when the back and forth conversation has to provide the only basis of trust for each party. Shipping a bass across town is tricky, adding international customs, fees and air transport further complicates things, so it got complicated, but we kept working together until it was sorted!
TB is an awesome place, I definitely have a new bass brother up north!

Well, no where near as cool as that Carlo, but I did decide to build my own VVT control plate for my 44-60 instead of using the extra 920D plate I had laying around. 920D gets their own custom CTS pots with their own custom taper. I didn’t like their taper with the Lākland pickups. I bought 250k audio taper pots and for the volumes and a 500k audio taper pot for the tone (.047 uF orange drop cap) all from Allparts and all solid shaft pots. I talked with Steve at Lākland late last year about which pots they use and they get a lot from Allparts. I think they use 3 250k audio pots on their USA Classics and the Skylines. The 500k gives it a good amount of extra brightness when the tone is dimed. I like it. Rolling it back slightly gets the stock sound. The Allparts pots feel like they’re much higher quality than the 920D pots (all are CTS). The Allparts have smoother action with more turning resistance. As you can see, I also opted for cloth wiring and a Pure Tone jack.
For those of you asking, “Why?”, it’s because I prefer a single master tone for ease of adjustments. I find it a lot easier to adjust on the fly and replicate tones I’ve previously had with the standard setup. Plus, on the concentric pot setup, the tone pots crosstalk to both pickups anyway without an output robbing resistor network in the circuit.

Hey, I've always been curious, maybe someone here knows. Why doesn't Lakland sell their hard shell cases separately? They sell the gig bag, which I've had. IMO, it's overpriced and not very protective. I would think they could make some sales with a Lakland labeled hard shell case that comes with the higher end basses. Anyone have any insight into this? I also would imagine, that if asked, they would sell me one. Has anyone inquired? Thanks.
