Z mode is very useful, allows for tonal changes without touching EQ. @JEDI BASS used my 44-01 on a gig and he really liked it!

My 44-02 ha a John East Unipre 5 knob 3 band in it and I love it! A very tight fit.

My 44-01 has two external batt compartments, an additional one had to be added.

Beautiful work there! With the battery charge indicator LED as well. I'm not tooled up to make a 2nd battery box though, so I would just go with 9V.

I did notice that the preamps that have PC boards attached to the potentiometers, like the JE pres do, were going to be a tight fit in many cases.

Thanks! I'm really digging the tone on the 55-76. Ran the first gig totally in parallel mode and the second gig last night totally in single coil mode on the pickup. It sounds great in either mode. Series mode is a bit louder in this MM Stingray pickup wiring so my plan is to flip the switch to that mode on a couple of songs where the bass is supposed to be accented in a particular section. Haven't hit one of those songs yet though, so not sure how it will sound in the band context while doing that.

Ooh! I’ve been lusting after a white DJ5. My ear didn’t bond with a DJ4 I owned for a spell which makes me hesitant to pull the trigger but yours is making me second (and third) guess myself. Nice acquisition!

Yea, I'm still getting used to the sound, it's making me re-eq everything. It's very aggressive compared to the 55-14, and since it's single coil, has some hum when pickups are solo'd but no worse than my Mike Lull. Granted my home practice space probably is the worst place for this since it doubles as my home office and has multiple computers, monitors, wireless access point, and more that I'm sure doesn't help.

White wasn't my first choice, but I like it more in person than in pictures. Since it's white, pictures often play light games either blowing it out or making it silver looking. It's a very nice white and is growing on me.

It was a Sweetwater used special, so got it at a great price and it's only 9 pounds 5 ounces, which is average to light for Skylines. It's a 2023 and still has plastic on the tuners and pickguard, so still in pretty mint condition. Truss rod needs some adjusting, but letting it climatize before I touch that.

I've played active basses for the past few years with a blend knob, so switching to passive with volume volume is a different way to achieve tones. I think I like volume volume instead of the blend, seems easier to target different sounds, but time will tell.

So far I like what I'm hearing!

I really, honestly, truly wasn't planning on buying a bass. But when this NOS 2018 55-02 showed up with a serious discount at a shop here in the Netherlands, I had to grab it. It still has to arrive, but I'm already very siked for it. Also very curious about how it holds up against my 2 USA Lakies, neck-wise.
I might swap the pickups for Aguilar or Nordstrand in the not too distant future. Maybe combine it with a John East or Aguilar preamp. But first: let's find out what's what.

Beautiful acquisition! If you have experience with both, I'd be curious how you find the Aguilar pickups compare with the Nordstrand and also how the John East pre compares to the Aguilar preamp.

It's here! It feels great. Strings are ancient D'Addario's so they'll have to come off pretty soon and it feels like an ex demo bass, so it also needs cleaning. But it's very well built and even with strings I don't like, it feels like a pretty darn good bass.
