BG02 arrived last weekend. The straightest neck with the lowest action of any bass I have ever owned, including US Lakies. Perfect angle with barely any relief. I didn't need another bass either but I'm really glad I bought this one. And check out that board!
Question: is there any (musical) reason to get a 44-60 or DJ4 if you've got a 4402? In other words, does the JJ option on the 4402 (with the MM split) sound about the same as those two basses?
if I understand the question correctly, if you are using the MM pickup in single coil mode, you have the equivalent of a J and J setup.
The tone is going to be relatively similar to a regular J and J setup. With all the other variables held constant (which rarely happens).
But for me, the allure of the MM/J is to get a very DIFFERENT sound than a straight-up jazz. But that's not really your question, is it?

I like to use Strap locks, because I play in a Pop Punk / Rock band and move around alot. I dont want to touch the strap buttons. Are there any strap locks out there that work for the stock buttons on a 55-02 ?
The best option that you are going to have is to use one of the Dunlop plastic strap locks, or find one of the rubber washers from a resealable bottle. I've seen that work before.

Any particular reason you don't want to change out the buttons? One of the first things I do for a new bass is swap on Dunlop locks. Can swap 'em back out (or not) later.

Congrats! Definitely not my cup of tea color-wise and I'm not really a RW guy, but that is one beautiful board. Hmmm, might have to change my perception of RW with black
It does sound different. The 44-02 gets a j-bass-ish tone but its more tame and polished than a full on j bass with good alnico singles.

Leo told me that the color of the bass was chosen BECAUSE of the color of the Abalone blocks....They are wild!

And I love the color...someday I will get a bass in that color....my wife says it is "too pink"...I say ney ney!!! It is beautiful.
I use Dunlops on ALL of my basses....they are an easy switch on Skylines....just make sure the screw is a bit larger than the one you remove...it USUALLY is.
Well...you CAN get a pretty convincing J sound out of the 44-02...but Like G-man says, the real draw is all of the "other sounds" you can get.
Also - to my ear anyways - the Hanson J's sound different than the 44-02 pickups...and if you like Fralins or Aeros, again, they have a pretty unique sound.
All that being said, if you like a "J" sound in general, you CAN get that out of a 44-02....
On the other hand, DJs are so great looking with the blocks and binding!
Thanks Doug. I love Burg Mist. I had a beautiful JO that color years ago. I had to sell that one when my dog was on her way out. I hate the cream pearl guard though. It came with four Jeannie's guards. Two in this color , the original mint and a white parchment. One cream and the parchment are new with the plastic still on them. Going to put the mint or parchment on it this weekend. I'd like to get tort and black guards for it.
