Lakland Owners Group #69

Interesting cause I reached out to Brian at Lakland and supposedly because of the serial number he's claiming maybe a one off custom number that they made I'm so lost, lol.
But he said that I'll reach back out on Monday once he researchers a bit deeper.!

Hi all... Last year when I bought my pre-owned 44-02 custom, it had a set of 40-100 steels with silver wrapping on the upper part of the string only, not around the brass-looking ball end.
Time to change em and I really, really like them. Any clue as to what brand uses the silver wrap? I asked the previous owner and he couldn't remember. I thought Lakland but wasn't sure...
They are very smooth on your fingers, almost like pressure-rounds/half-rounds but my eyes are getting old and I can't focus that close on the wrap.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Well... Maybe they consider it a custom... Not sure how the records were kept there for a bit...

Gecko gregc and I all saw these basses so we know...

As gecko said.. He owned Midas...

Those are lakland ss strings.. Very good imho.... You can order them from lakland directly.

You'll be surprised how different it sounds with new strings!!! I'm always amazed even when I change with identical strings

What you have there is not a 5507. As Greg mentioned 5507s were all humbuckers with preamps.

What you have there is one of 3 passive 55 JJ CS basses ( the "sisters") which were made just before the company transferred ownership.

There was this one...A gold one "midas" which I believe may be for sale now ( ??? If not sold) and a black one which went to Russia and read later converted to a Fretless bass and had a preamp installed.

These were some of the very last "Dan Lakin" built basses.

They are great players....I saw all three at the factory and played Midas

It is made in the USA, it's priced fairly I believe, so if it's a 5507 but something else. I'm just elated that after 20 plus years of playing I'm finally able now to own a Lakeland! More so I'm psyched about the Chis pickups I've read nothing but good things as well as that they do sound beet in passive so that a plus for me I think.
Either way I'm excited! I just hope that it's not being billed as something higher than what it actually is..
Hopefully Brian at Lakeland will shred some light and I can stop thinking about these things.
Fwiw, yeah the memory issues happen a lot on this end too. :roflmao:

These were made with parts that were "laying around".
All were passive, with single coil Chisonics.

Oh my, I hope the one I'm getting sounds like the one you're describing, if not it's still a Lakland made in the USA and that a cool thing as well.

Yes it's 100% US.... And very well built.
The chisonics are great pickups!
I've got a 5507 with humbuckers and a 5560 with single coils... Love them both!

Yep, not a 55-07 but after a quick setup I'm in the bonding process. She'll need a little tweak with her fret ends which doesn't surprise me as with Flame maple and Birdseye necks.

Yes I concur the Chisonics are really cool and with the passive set up it allows for the character of the pick up to come out!

I can help...maybe...I've shipped just a few basses. a few hundred.

Some thoughts that work for me, YMMV:
Use/obtain a box that will fit your bass (bass in a case or gig bag, idea is the same) as much as possible, with the least amount of dead-air space. I say this because you are charged dimensionally for a box that large. weight really is of secondary importance. This is with UPS and Fedex. Reuse boxes and shipping material (if you can, that negates some of the up-front cost).

Ship at UPS or Fedex company offices/depots, if possible, versus 3rd party shipping places. I think they add fees on top of what Fedex/UPS charges. They won't admit it, but I'm sure it happens. I pack all my stuff, I never use the Fedex people to pack for me, I am assuming that's more upfront cost that is easily avoided.

Maybe its just a given, but ship ground. Don't skimp on insurance/declared value. I've had 2 or 3 shipping problems in my life, and was glad I had insured the package.

I don't like USPS as a receiver, but in some cases you might save some money using USPS. Their tracking sucks, and is much more stressful as a receiver. don't know what or when you'll get it. I've been happiest with Fedex, although everyone will tell you horror stories for any of the shipping companies.

Last thing. Most I remember having spent shipping a single conventional bass is $95-100 from coast to coast. I don't know where you're getting a quote for $200, but that's not typically what I pay.
