Thanks! :) It is silver-leaf applied over black that was sprayed on top of the orig turquoise factory finish, and then "distressed" (artistic affected wear). Under the gloss clear-coat is a 'dusting' of fine metallic particles - which is only apparent in person - it's something Pat and I worked out. The metal-leaf attracts/reflects light, especially stage-lighting which is bright/saturated. Looks great from the audience - I saw Ingrid Michelson (with Chris playing it) here in SF at the Filmore and it was very distinctive visually on stage. Sounded great too! (he's a very talented player! :thumbsup:)

I have a problem with my new Lakland Skyline (44-01) - the bass pot is really hissy if I boost it and always has a bit of background hiss even in the neutral position. Mid and treble, volume and pickup selector all are noiseless. I don't get the hiss in passive mode. Is this a shielding issue? Should I return it to the shop? It has a 2 year warranty but the shop is 400 miles away so I'd have to courier it. I'm in the UK so not able to return it to Lakland easily. Would it invalidate the warranty if I opened it up and did the shielding myself?

If it's under warranty I'd email the seller and Lakland to see if they will cover shipping.

May be more than simply shielding. Shielding yourself should not void the warranty

My 98' 494 has a slotted nut. I'm not sure if they used the same nut on the 5594's though. However, with that being said.....so long as the truss rod actually works, I wouldn't get too worked up over the nut being original or after market. This just means someone actually took care of their instrument! They had enough foresight to realize their nut was wearing out and needed to be replaced. Or perhaps, their nut was fine but they preferred a slotted style instead. If the truss rod was replaced, you could tell by (1) a chuck of the heel would have been cut out on the backside of the neck where it mates against the body to gain access in order to remove and replace the rod. If you see a "surgery" scar were a chunk of wood was cut out and replaced on the backside if the heel, the rod has been replaced. (2) the other way to replace a rod is to strip off the finger board in order to gain access to the rod. If the finger board appears to be non-original, then the perhaps the rod was replaced. Obviously, this is hard to tell as a finger board replacement can look original if done by a high level luthier. But even if the rod has been replaced, I wouldn't sweat it too much. That just means you shouldn't have to worry about truss rod issues for an extremely looooooooong time. Enjoy the bass.

Thanks g4string and others who confirmed the slutted nut in early Laklands. I also wrote to Lakland, and Brian replied that they did use slotted nuts in the early years, and he offered me to purchase an allen nut, although not 100% sure if it fits. I ordered one, let's see if I can replace the nut. So, I bought the '99 55-94 today and played it at rehersal. What an amazing instrument!
