Lakland Owners Group #69

Anyone knows, what is the difference between preparation of US maple fretboads at Lakland today and pre 2000? Those old necks look soo good. Or is it just time, which makes it yellower?

See pics of 97 and 2012 models.. I al sure you know what I am talking about..

Speaking of necks; I have a question about replacing/swapping one. I bought my 44-64 with a J neck and it is 1.45 at the nut (like a Sadowsky Will Lee); I was expecting 1.5. Any experience with swapping necks at the shop in terms of cost, surrender before build, turnaround time, etc? Happy to send the current neck back, but have a gig where I'd like to use it first week in Feb. Thanks!

Can you really tell the difference ? 0.05" or 1.2mm ? I'm sure I couldn't.

I think it's a combination of age and the fact that Dan was able to purchase an excess load if very high grade BEM boards that lasted quite a while.

I know current Lakland BEM is really nice but I don't think they have been able to find another order of BEM as nice as that early shipment.

So .. Do you have the bass or is it on order? I'm a bit confused.

If it is " on order" ....I'd email Leo to see if you could do a swap....

Yup. Had a Will Lee Sadowsky for a bit, swapped to a NYC 1.5 and never looked back. Try it out;it is noticeable even though the actual measure seems de minimis. The first and second frets are very C-shaped and don’t give much purchase for your thumb. The 1.5 is a bit more D-shaped. I have long hands, so maybe that’s why I notice, but if you play a 1.45 and a 1.5 side by side, you will definitely notice a difference near the nut. From the 5th feet up through Jaco territory; not at all.

For sure. I wanted to get a custom Lakland a while back and markusbass mocked one up in teal green for me without gold hardware. I recently saw a picture of a dingwall in matte Pelham blue and was amazed by it. Then it got me thinking what would those two colors look like with gold hardware as well.

A fan of gold hardware, eh? There aren't many of us out there, it seems! Personally, I'm a huge fan! I had a Fender Jazz Deluxe V in Wine Red with a black guard I put gold hardware on. Totally cool bass! Now I have one of those Deluxe Exotic top 55-94s with gold hardware. Needless to say, an even cooler, better bass!

That wine red must look amazing! I got the idea for gold hardware after getting a gold sticker from Alex Grey last night and putting it on my bass. I never was one for a stickered up bass but i figure, what the hell?

I just came home with this 55-02 Deluxe I've been stalking at a pawn shop since April. They were stubborn on they're $999.99 price for a LONG time but I got it for half that today. Luckily it lived behind the counter all those months so it faired well.
It will need a new nut as it's very very low. Not sure who or why.
It's very playable as is but it looks wonky.
