I was thinking that the dark star would brighten up the p/u placement since my original 73 Fender Tele is such a muddy monster (which I love) but want something a little more useable for most applications.

It definitely has a unique voice. I’ve never played a Dark Star, but I have a Decade with the humbuckers and the neck pickup is not too muddy considering it’s placement.

Having played Decade's with both darkstars and Chi-Sonics, I'd say that neither is too muddy. I'd still aways prefer to have the option of single-coil at the extreme neck position (as with my T-40) but both are perfectly good choices.

These days though what are your choices for BiSonics? DS's are sadly out of prouduction and the Guild Bi-Sonics might not be (though I don't know for sure) properly spaced for a Fender style instrument. Is it just Novak that makes wider spaced BiSonics now?

Novak builds a version of the dark star. He has also offered to build me a repro of the Tele-bucker.

Funny you should mention the mighty T-40. I’m currently madly in love with my 2 and what the pickups and magical tone pot can do. I wouldn’t think twice about having a T-40 pickup installed in a Lakland, in fact.... it would be ideal! I’d choose a Skyline though.

After 11 years 1 month and 1 day and roughly 77,000 posts since the Lakland Owners Group formed here in TB, y’all have finally convinced me to acquire my first Lakland; a new 55-02 Deluxe in Spalted maple with rosewood board. It finally showed up today and I think I’m in lust. It’s beautiful and plays so incredibly well that I may have scratched my last itch.

How many do I need to own to get a number? Wait, are there still numbers?

I love Jazz basses (as evidenced by several hanging on the wall in my pic above), I really like P basses for how well they sit in the mix playing with my band, and I appreciate the punchy growl of a Stingray. I own variants of all of those but was never fully pleased with the B string on any of them. I have a couple buddies who’ve praised Lakland’s b string so my search began.

I started with the 55-60’s as one of my favorite bassists plays one. Once I began researching those, it wasn’t long before my search evolved into a cyclone of comparisons across the product lines, looking for a variety of tonal options, comparisons between different electronics, maple/rosewood, blah blah blah. Once I stumbled on Lakland’s video comparing the 55-94 to a Jazz, P, and Stingray, I knew that’s the model I wanted...but I’m inherently cheap so worked my way down the line through the 55-14 and ended up here. And I couldn’t be happier.

I love the look. I love how it feels. I love the sounds. It’s a veritable Swiss Army Knife.

But I still want a 55-60. In time.
