There is no doubt that the company is very well run, far better than before and the quality of the products are top shelf. Won’t argue about the feel of a well used instrument either. I do maintain that the US “Dan Era” basses have a unique character. Not looking to stir a pot. Just my opinion. Fully respect the experience of others.

I was a member on the old LOG web site and just found the group is still going strong here at talkbass

I have two Lakland basses: a Skyline 44-AJ which I have had for a few years, and just recently picked up one of the Skyline Ice Metallic Blue 44-60:

Changed the strings to Thomastik-Infield flatwounds and this bass not only looks great, sounds great but plays as smooth as butter. I had to do very little setup on it too. My nickname in my band is now Ice Man

Because the material is very hard to find in large quantities any more. Dan found a large supply back in the early days, but the new owners don't seem to be able to duplicate that material order for whatever reason.

Dan's order was a actually an overstock from a flooring contract!

Imagine how great that floor must have looked!

Here's a pic of my Skyline 44-AJ:

My 44-AJ has Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickups and the Audere Jazz Classic pre-amp.

My first bass back in 1985 was an Ibanez P-Bass clone. The next bass I bought in 1989 was a translucent dark blue metallic Carvin LB70 that I played up until a few years ago when I switched to the Laklands. I wanted to switch to a lighter bass and shorter scale bass (Carvin is very heavy and 36in scale 24 fret) so I did a lot research, and tried different brands at GC. I bought the 44-AJ off Amazon to check it out and was amazed how great it played and the quality.

Carl Pedigo helped me tremendously via email with setting up the 44-AJ and replacing the Bartolini preamp and pickups, so great customer service from Lakland too.

The Ice Metallic 44-60 I plan no mods, doesn't need any

I like my action really low, I could set the relief on the Carvin down to .010, on both Laklands are set to .007 My Carvin also had a dead spot on the D string 6th fret. No dead spots on the Laklands.

Oh why oh why won't they build the only Lakland I'd be interested in, a 5 string hollow body. The only competition they'd have is the Warwick Starbass and that Ibanez that looks like it was dragged though a barn.

This bridge pickup, a little dirt, and a little chorus, makes one heckuva monstrous tone...even with the fake wear.

I've asked about that many times... There is an issue with the string tension and the bridge not staying seated.
