Lakland Owners Group #69

To demythologise the Lakland numbering system:
the first digit is the number of strings.
the second digit is the scale length. (34" or 35").
the last two digits are the year of introduction (or the year of the model it's based on).

So a Lakland 55-94 is a 5 string, 35" scale model first introduced in 1994.
The Skyline equivalent is the 55-02 because it was introduced in 2002.
A 44-64 is a 4 string, 34" scale bass based on an instrument from 1964.

Some basses are just named. The Decade (which is technically a 44/55-04), the Hollowbody (which is technically a 44-01, but there's already a different model with that name), the Darryl Jones (which is technically a 44/55-76), and the J-Sonic (which is just a 44/55-60 with different pickups)

Somebody here does have a 54-94 I believe, and (in the other direction) someone else has a 45-94. Jedi Bass, is that you?

I had a 45-76 that was black w/ birdseye board, abalone dots, and a Darkstar in the '76 EBMM Stingray position. Luckily, Carl built it to take a MM pickup also. I quickly got rid of the Darkstar and put the SD humbucker back in. A Darkstar in the MM location w/ a Bartolini preamp is not a pleasant sounding setup IMO. I was still addicted to 5 strings at the time, and ended up selling the bass. I regret it!

Just threw some new pups in my DJ4 and it sounds so much better. Completely in love with this bass, the Hansons just sounded flat to my taste so I replaced them with an Aguilar 70's wound set.

I've been curious about Aguilar p'ups. The fact that their amps and cabs are so amazing, is enough to make me want to try them.

I definitely recommend them. These are the AG 4J-70s. I play in an emo band and these are the first jazz pickups I've sound that sound as good clean as they do with overdrive. They have a nice growl to them when I dig in hard with a pick but can also be nicely mellow with the tone rolled off. I've tried hum cancelling and overwound pups but found them too lacking in mids.

You are describing my experience with the stock pickups. I'm glad I eventually figured out what works for me.

My Carlo would be a 45-94 if it used the Lakland numbering system. AFAIK, Carl doesn't use that system, but it is a 44-94 style bass (Same body style, headstock and pre/pickups) with a 35" scale.
