If it’s maple, it’s not without a finish. Maple, according to most sources of info, can’t be left raw or bare. Lakland uses tru oil to finish or seal their maple necks.
Maybe that is what was on it, but I just didn't like the feel. Maybe needed more oil? The back of the headstock kad a regular finish but you can see where the oil finish stops just before the headstock.
Other than the Lakland FAQs, are there any maple neck maintenance tips? I generally like the music man neck maintenance procedure and video. Other suggestions?
Tru oil diluted down a bit with mineral spirits. One coat, IIRC, is what Carl recommended... and probably what Lakland did when he was one of the main men. Personally, I’d do more than one with undiluted tru oil, and get a nice glossy appearance. Then I’d sand it with the finest grit I can find until it feels right. That’s what I’ve done on many non-Lakland glossy poly necks that had dings and finish flaws.
