Happy Sunday all......question re Chi-sonic Js : since they are single coils, I know they'll buzz if soloed, but can I assume they're quiet when played both full up? I'm also curious to hear people's experience with them passive vs with specific preamps. I changed my pending custom 54-14 to have 'em......because my favorite flavour is "variety"![]()

A single coil pickup will create a nice strong signal from the vibrating metal strings but will also create unwanted signals from any nearby changing magnetic fields. An example being the transformers or switching elements in a nearby amplifier. A dual coil cuts that unwanted signal down by rejecting common mode signals with a reverse wound second coil.
The idea with a single coil J pickup configuration is to have the neck and bridge pickup wound in the opposite direction so that there is some common mode rejection between them. This works best if both pickups are around the same volume going into the preamp. I don't know if any particular pickup can be installed in reverse so that they are both wound in the same direction. But if one of them was, it would increase the unwanted common mode noise instead of reducing it. Please note that I haven't verified that a reversed pickup will cause increased noise from external sources but theoretically it should. Maybe someone else here has verfied that case?

I used to own that one :-/ . Another sacrifice of mine back when I was in an original music band that required a 5 string. Now, I’d get along just fine with the monster.
