Lakland Owners Group #69

Darkstar pickup in the classifieds for anyone wanting to mod...

Yadadada :banghead:

I almost put that pup in my US Glaub. I sold the Darkstar to him then bought the Korean inca silver hollowbody here on TB that has Bartolini hummers. Previously, I've had all three pickup versions of the HB- Barts, Chi's and Darkstars. The Barts are too polite for me but I wanted a great lightweight Lakland HB body/neck and this one delivers. I'm thinking of modding with Nordstrands- a Big Single at the neck and a Bigman in the sweet spot where the upper coils are in the same position as my G&L L1000's in single coil mode. Then again I have a spare vintage L1000 humbucker in my parts drawer- hmmmm.

With all this talk of Dark Stars, I should mention that I have a Skyline HB with Dark Stars (in CAR) that I am probably going to list in the classifieds soon. I will continue to get my Dark Star fix through my shoreline gold US Dunn/Glaub (which is going nowhere!). I'll post pics of both late tonight or tomorrow, though I know some of youse guys are well-acquainted with both.:)

Which between the Chi's and Darkstars did you prefer? I've owned Laklands with both but never an HB. Always have and still want one though.

Unless you're looking for warmer tones (the Barts do that well) of those three the Darkstar was the winner. In the HB I feel big singles are the way to go but absolutely at the neck.

I FINALLY took the time to install the MK5P and MK5J-T in my 55-01 with Glockenklang 3-band preamp. I originally bought the bass second hand with Nordstrand Fat Stacks in it. The mids were nice, but to me it lacked real low end. I switched in some Carvin SP2 pickups. These have PLENTY of low end, but not a ton of mids. I got these Bartolini's months ago after a lot of discussion with Doug at Bartolini, who is a TON of help. I like them so far! Nice low end to them, with the characteristics of a P when soloing the neck. I'll get some recordings sometime. I first put on the rounds that the bass had so that I could hear the difference with strings that I knew the sound of on the bass. After hearing the difference, I swapped out the rounds and put on a set of TI JF345's. It's the first time I have ever used the Jazz Flat's. I like them. I need to get the nut replaced, as the current nut has huge slots and the strings are too close to the fretboard on that side of the neck. I've known this for awhile, but didn't want to do anything until I settled on the strings I would be using.
