I lost count past 20, but mine were mostly Skylines. Currently at 2 Lakies, and a Fender P.

and...if I remember correctly....all of yours can be identified by either sparkle paint or a bit of white leather dye that rubbed off from a well worn belt....

I've lost track myself...maybe a fun quarantine project....to list them all....hmmm

After years of lusting, I was finally able to order my first Lakland this past week! Not only will it be my first Lakland, but also my first 5-er, so doubly excited. It will probably be a month or more before it gets here, so I'm gonna' have to wait patiently. I'll likely have a ton of questions for seasoned Lakland owners in the coming weeks/months. Happy I was able to locate a group for Lakland owners; I hope to be able to add something positive in the future.

There are many here..Tex...JJ and others who know more about the technology...

Here's what I have coming in - Skyline 55-02 Deluxe from Sweetwater. My main bass for the last 20 years has been a Fender Urge (32" scale), so the 35" will be a fun adjustment. I also really love the sound and feel of Ernie Ball Slinkys, so I'm hoping the extra longs they make will work on this one.

I've searched and read several old threads on replacing 5594/5502 pickups and was wondering what the latest and greatest is for swapping the stock MM/J set. My fretless 5502 sounds great as is with the stock LH3 setup, but my fretted just sounds way to dark for some reason even with the same pickups/pre. What I'm missing is the treble that Stingrays and even J/P basses have and I end up cranking the treble and still can't get the right brightness for a good attack. Any thoughts out there?

Question for the 55-02 owners - does the J pickup have a lot of single-coil hum, or it is pretty quiet? When I play at church, that is the biggest problem I currently have with my Urge; I have to run it in "humbucker" mode with the 2 J's. Thanks,

The J in the 55-02 is a split coil. It's noiseless.

Dead quiet. The J is a split. The MM pup makes no noise also.

If your fretless has treble that your fretted doesn’t, I would contact Lakland. Because, that sounds weird!

But, in the mean time.... see if something is weird with the MM humbucker. That’s where that Stingray brightness and attack should come from. Is the MM pickup height adjusted wrong? It can and should be a smidge closer to the strings than the J pickup. If the height is correct, check each coil by soloing the MM pup, and using the switch to try each coil individually. If all seems normal with the MM pickup, then are you using bright strings like fresh stainless? Is the mid frequency switch set to the factory setting? Is your battery fresh? That’s all I got, LOL.

A 55 can do a J, a MM, and a P pretty darn well, depending on who you ask of course. It’s a “Swiss army bass”. But, I always loved mine with both pickups equal and a flat EQ. That’s the Lakland sound!

no idea, but probably something like 200 in 12 years. Slower of late. but not slow.

Thank you for your reply. I'll check all those things to be sure. It has nickels on it right now, but so does the fretless.
