Ok Lakland experts. Is this neck quartersawn? These are the best pics I have:

It appears to be a Flatsawn neck, from what I can see. My Quarter Sawn neck looks different. However as far as I know Lakland 44-94's are all Quarter Sawn necks. So I guess looks can be deceiving. Here’s two pictures of my 1999 55-94 with it’s Quarter Sawn neck

That board is definitely birdseye maple... looks like US tuners too. So, appears to be a US neck and “should” be quartersawn. What’s the SN stamp look like? It should be stamped into the wood on the side of the headstock near the E tuner.

There’s always a chance it was a custom order and someone asked for flatsawn. Here’s what quartersawn looks like at the headstock tip.

The SN is properly stamped. The fingerboard is absolutely beautiful birdseye maple. The usual “Made In USA” mark is missing from the back of the peghead.

I sent the pic to Carl. He said it is within specs of flat sawn maple but not perfectly flat sawn by definition. I assume because the grain runs diagonally. He also said it’s quite possible a custom ordered neck.

I would contact John Pirrucelli and see if they can trace the SN back to see what the deal is.

Laklands did not say "Made in the USA" until around 2001 because the Skyline series did not exist and ALL Laklands were made in the USA. No need to call it out.

I guess there are always exceptions to the rule my 55-94 from 1999 is stamped, Made in The U.S.A.

Has anyone modded their 55-94 or similar to have a passive tone control? My bass has the Bartolini preamp which doesn’t include a passive tone. My tech says he’ll need to route a space for another control in order to add a passive tone. Not sure if it’s worth the hassle. Other preamps have passive tone controls and perhaps it’s easier to swap out the pre if it is that important to me.
I’d need to source another knob for the extra control pot. Does anyone know what type of control knobs Lakland use on the 55-94? Are they easily sourced?

I couldn’t find any - ask secondhand is pos your best bet. I ended up getting a full set of the new style knobs from Lakland direct

Yep. That's a 2002 not a 1999. Prior to the Skyline series no Laklands were marked as made in the USA.

Ok y'all... I bow my head in embarrassment..
Got this '03 44-01 last summer... I won't lie, I didn't take to it at first, or second, or even third... just didn't gel for some reason. It happens... well, took it out of the case for the first time in a couple of months yesterday, just to give it another go... I wanted to start with all knobs at center and tweak from there...

Well... insert embarrassed moment...

I never knew that the Volume was a push/pull...
Found out when I accidentally applied outward pressure while turning up the volume..
In my defense, I've played my passive Duck Dunn for forever... and no experience with a 44-01...
Regardless, this might change things as I wasn't gelling with it, again.... I'm gonna toss some flats on it.. presently strung with DR Black Beauties.. they're just a bit too bright on this band for my taste...
So, we'll see what happens. Maybe I'll end up liking it after all... in passive mode, of course

I've had this HB30 for a few years, and never loved the burst finish on the maple top. I tried a tort guard, but it still didn't come to life. So I punted and went for a refinish of the body in LP blue. I also changed the pots to Bourne 250ks and put in a .1 capacitor and a True Tone jack, and replaced the ugly J knobs. The pick guard is from Chandler Music (Pickguard Planet.) Very happy with the look and tone!
