Lakland Owners Group #69

I’ve broken some boards. Didn’t have my own school, but taught some TKD. The repeated hand injuries and the desire to play bass ‘til I die were big factors in my giving up MMA. The injuries were weird sparring accidents that I won’t go into unnecessary detail about. I have pain all the time from them.

Anyways... I can totally see why quartersawn boards would split easier along the grain. But, necks aren’t subject to impacts down the middle or splitting forces (punk rock stage antics don’t count LOL). It also makes sense why quartersawn necks should be stiffer than flatsawn.

All in all, after seeing rift and quartersawn compared, I can see why Jimmy H’s bass neck isn’t considered flatsawn by Lakland. The long straight grain down the length will look just like quartersawn. Only the end grain looks flat-ish. For some, like me, it’s totally a NON-issue. Jimmy and I have messaged and I would buy or trade for his bass in a second if I could.

Sorry for all of the pain JJ!

you seem to like top torture yourself...:)

I did some Taekwon-Do isn grade school...but gave up after yellow belt

I’ve got a passive tone on my 55-94 and it’s great and very useful.
(In my case East Uni pre- vol, blend, passive tone w pp active passive, stacked bass and treble with pp pick attack boost, stacked mid and freq)

it’s also very much flatsawn. Not that it matters

I've got a passive set up on my 55-07 - don't use it much....but nice to have.

It’s all good. My fiancé used to like to squeeze/massage my hands and fidget with my joints, when we were holding hands. I quickly learned where the damage is LOL, and she doesn’t hit those tender areas anymore.

On the way: 44-64 GZ
I hope this sounds as good as it looks. I've had a few of the DJ & DJ5 Laklands. They all played great. I know this will play amazing with the 1.5" nut Jazz neck. That's a given.

I always assumed that the passive default was there on the 44 & 55-94’s, to prevent having to open up the control cavity and change out a drained

9 volt battery, with the Bartolini preamps, during a performance. Like you mentioned, it’s comforting to know you can go passive and continue playing.

Just my take however. The separate battery compartment on the newer basses is a nice feature.

The pic is a little gritty. But, it looks like you got a tight and straight grained body. Looks SWEET!!! Any idea what it weighs? Tight grain sometimes means heavy.

I'll take better pics once it arrives. I bought it because it said "9.4 lbs". That's one of the lightest 44-64 GZ models I've seen.

Howdy LOG fam! I come in search of advice.

For those of you playing Lakland 5 strings with roundwounds, would you mind sending me some recommendations for string sets? I have a DJ5 which I love dearly, but I'm still on the quest for finding the right string for it a year and half into owning it. Finding the right combination of string feel and tone has proven difficult.

What I've tried so far:
D'Addario Chromes 45-132: Love the tight string feel, tight and punchy B string, sits in the mix well, but missing the brightness/sparkle of rounds
DR Hi Beams 45-130: Not my cup of tea, too scooped, and really floppy feeling with the round core.
Lakland Stainless Steel 45-128: Really like the sound of these, decently tight feel, but B string is a little lacking in punch and definition with the 128 gauge (especially when downtuned to A#)

I'm looking for a relatively middle-of-the-road roundwound tone (a decent amount of sparkle, but not over-the-top aggressive), higher-tension feel, and a tight and defined B string. If I could combine the tone of the Lakland strings with the feel of the Chromes I'd be in heaven.

It seems like hex-core, with a B string of >130 gauge is the way to go here (and bonus points if they're long enough to string through the body). There are a few options which fit this bill, but I'm curious to see what you all have to say on this. If you have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

I usually use DR Hi Beams on my basses. I recent got a Lakland 55-02 and the strings were dead on it. I had a new pack of MTD STR5CM strings 45,65,85,105,135 that I bought a while back. So I happened to find them and put them on my Lakland. I really like what I'm hearing with these strings. Good defined B and sweet mid with good upper end. These are starting break in and feel really good, better than my Hi Beams I use.

These go for around $35 from what I have recently seen on the net.

Hope this helps!

If you can find some DR Longnecks, they have a hex core like their low riders, so they’re stiff and tight feeling. They also are made for 35” thru body applications.

Also, I used MTD sets for years too. I think the set I used had a 135 B. Highly recommend those as well, but can only be top loaded.

That definitely helps. I honestly didn't even know that MTD made strings, but those gauges sound ideal. I'll definitely check them out. Thanks!

I'm currently rolling fat beams 45-125 on my 55-01

Used to use Elixer EXL-170 5SL. Might fit your bill better 45-130 hex

Cool, thanks for the recommendation! Looks like the EXL-170 5SL are actually D'Addarios? Sounds like it could be a good option.

I've got a couple sets of Optima gold strings coming... Stay tuned!

Ooh, will definitely be excited to hear what you think of those.

Great call on the Longnecks, thanks. Lo Riders have been on my list to try, and I'm not totally opposed to top-loading, but cool that the Longnecks can go through body on a 35 inch scale. And nice to hear another vote for the MTDs. Out of curiosity, why is it that the MTDs can only be top-loaded? Is it length or lack of flexibility? Thanks!

Thanks for the recommendations everyone! Really appreciate the comments. And it's also probably worth mentioning that for the particular band I use my DJ5 for, we tune a half step down from standard. I'm also curious to try Power Slinkys if anyone has experience with those. Thanks!

It's certainly doable especially with a Duo Strap, which is something I've used for a long time. Before the Duo Strap their was the McIntosh Double Comfort Strap. My 55-94 is right around the same weight. Of course the neck is longer.

Is it an Alder or Swamp Ash body? If it's Swamp Ash that would make it a bit lighter. My 1958 Precision weighs a ton. It's nearly 13 lbs. Alder is just heavier.
