Regarding the neck/ body discrepancy ... Yes this is a very very early model and a Lakland employee may have put on a 4460 ( Joe Osborn) neck for any number of reasons....
Also... He may have built it for himself.. Which does happen from time to time... Which means it's really a hybrid bass with whatever they could find at the time...I have a couple of those myself ( and they are great BTW).
I TRULY believe this is all USA...no issues......

The first Glaubs are 2001, as far as I know. Here’s the serial number chart from Lakland...
This one is actually stamped 12/99 and 1/00.
Interesting history. I own BG02. BG01 and BG02 are both JO width necks. No discernible date on the neck or pocket on 02. The large "2" is an impression from the 2 in black marker in the bottom of the neck pocket. Some pencil on the neck but I can't make out what is says.
I was thinking about it last night, I imagine when they started making BG’s and JO’s, they were just using from a stockpile of necks from the original Lakland 44 94’s and 55 94’s.
Interesting. Here is the sale thread for my BG21. You can see the pocket/neck shots a few posts in. Smears are under the neck serial but it all looks legit. Its the thinnest neck Ive ever played both at the nut and depth.

Now that you mention that, it really looks like the smears under the neck serial on mine are JO something. The headstock stamp is BG21 though so the parts cross pollination theory seems correct!
JO production start is listed as 1998. So JO necks were on hand.......
Lakland noob here. It's finally time for me to man up and get a 5 string and I figured I'd give Lakland a shot since they're known for their amazing B string. Was looking for some advice on a few models, namely the 55-02, DJ5 and 55-60/JO. There's no Lakland dealers anywhere nearby or I would be willing to drive a few hours to go try them.
I'm looking for something that has some smooth deep lows for reggae while also being able to flip over to something more usable in a 70's funk context with a good mid growl and high end sizzle.
With this in mind I was initially looking at a Hanson 55-02 (I really wanted to like the Barts but the low end thump doesn't sound as good from the few clips I've been able to find on YT) for it's versatility, but I'm curious if you folks think I'll be missing out on a deeper bass tone from the DJ5/55-60's?
I've also heard a ton of conflicting opinions on the difference in necks between the DJ5 and the other Lakland 5's so I'd love to hear if you folks think the difference is subtle or if the DJ5 is significantly thicker or if it really is just a case by case basis. I have relatively small hands that seem to prefer thinner necks and going to 35" is already going to be a big change for me so I'm not sure a DJ5 is a good idea.
I'm also struggling with how much weight I should put in the fretboard wood. Typically I wouldn't consider maple boards since I'm playing reggae/dub and don't want much brightness in that tone but I've read that these Lakland's you can barely hear the difference if at all.

I truly think a 5502 would serve you very well and is extremely versatile.
I don't think you'd miss the " J" pickups because you can get there with a 5502.
As for the necks... Those have standardized and there is not any difference these days... The major difference used to be in the DJ 4 string (IMHO).
Just to clarify...the major difference between a DJ and a 5560 is the body size and profile...the DJ being smaller.
The neck profiles for the fivers are all the same... Including between US and skylines... The difference is the wood itself.
I happen to be a rosewood guy myself and do believe there is a difference in tone .. So go RW!!!
You will love the sustain and sound of the Lakie B....guaranteed!
