That actually is a scheff.... Owned and played by Jerry Scheff himself at one time.
It was actually built for one of his sons.
I pursued that bass for an awful long time.
He had it for sale for ridiculous price because of who his father was.
I made him an offer that he refused.
I was later referred ( by a LOGGER) to guitar center online that had it used for less than what I had originally offered him.
He should have took my offer to begin with.
That is a real awesome base.
One of the best parts is it has some of Jerry's schmutz on the back of the neck near the headstock

Yes it is, I have a build in mind. I know I'm going to regret selling the Lakland, it just doesn't get much play anymore.

This was many many many many years and many many many heartbreaks and many many many dollars and many many frustrations in building.
The only problem is when I think I have everything I need., Something else shows up that I absolutely have to have.

In house! John's brother Bo is in charge of the pickup operation. Nearly all Lakland basses come with in-house pickups.
Holy fretnation... were the body black, I'd say black for sure. But that dark brown natural look, I have to say, the tort really sets it off. And I'm usually an anti-tort sort of kid. But man, that's clean
It's actually trans black, but in bright light the result is dark ebony/brown.....I'm torn, and even considering an abalone custom...because I tend to overthink this stuff
I have Chis on my 54-JJ, but I do not have a bass with Lakland singles. To my ear the Chis sound wider range than the singles on my Fender J5, with more upper mid/high extension. I love 'em.
Tort. Trans black has some of the undertone challenges of grey so it might look different in different types of lighting. To me the black in the pics accentuate the brown undertones in that light. I think the tort blends better and makes those tones work. So it looks less brown if that makes sense.
Plus, when in doubt the answer is always tort, right?

Well, I was in doubt, but after seeing it in different light over the last 24 hrs I am favouring tort' over the black. Now my only question is whether some sort of custom (like abalone) might be much nicer. I'll leisurely ruminate that question, but am now focused on how it plays and sounds so good
