Lakland Owners Group #69

My 55-02 is a solid 10+ lbs. It’s not bad. But, my 55-AJ is only 8 lbs. and it is a big difference on the shoulder switching between them.

My no. 1 55-60 (Old Glory) is a heavy one weighing in at right around 11lbs. It was untenable until I found a good 4” strap. The only nights it’s an issue is the 4 hour bar gigs which are rarer and rarer for me (thankfully).

Finding lightweight ash, especially for imports, has to be very hard nowadays. Northern ash (heavy - usually VERY heavy) may be what they’re now using since swamp ash is nearly gone, and remaining pieces are priced super high. I don’t buy northern ash body blanks. If basswood, pine, and other affordable lightweight woods are good enough for G&L and EBMM, I’ll use ‘em too! And, I think Lākland should start considering ash alternatives for Skylines. IIRC, sassafras looks nearly identical, for transparent finishes, and is readily available.

No hi-jack intended. Are there any "real" differences between the US Classics and US Customs other than what's advertised? (Limited features and price obviously) I'm curious about the US 44-60 "Classic".

I'm a very happy owner of a US 44-51m and former owner of a 55-64 Skyline.

Thanks for any opinions and knowledge shared.

Short answer, no. The differences would be more along the lines of "bells & whistles," like quilted/flame translucent finish, mother of pearl markers, binding, matching headstock, etc.

Sometimes those bells & whistles matter, sometimes they don't.

On a personal note, before I ordered my US 55-94, I spoke with the folks at Lakland about potentially ordering a classic US 55-14. For me, once I was above a certain price point the custom made more sense and I figured I should get all of the options I wanted because I knew it was going to be a keeper.

Beautiful! That’s a color that is close to my heart

It sounds like honey and plays like a glove......if my house caught fire I'd grab Clementine in 1 hand and my '98 Fender in the other on my way out (since my wife has her own legs and the kids have moved out ;). )

Contemplating putting my 55-AJ up for sale. I really like it, and it’s a looker, but I keep gravitating back to the ergonomics of my 55-02. It’s a 2017 model, weighs 9.2 lbs, and sets up with super low action and a straight board. The top pops in good lighting.

PM me if you have any interest. Some pics to whet the appetite of my fellow Lākland lovers.
(Edit: corrected the weight at 9.2lbs)
