Lakland Owners Group #69

First post here, a few pics of my 44-01 Spalted and 44-02 Cherryburst. I love both these basses, the necks feel great. I guess I prefer the 44-02 for its pickups and it has a more powerful output. Both great basses. Hope to one day own a USA made Lakland, and possibly a 5 string although I'm mainly a 4 player. Rock or Jazz on, Happy New Year!

Nice basses man! welcome to the LOG! I also have the 44-02 and 55-02, both Deluxes - very sweet playing. My 44-02 Deluxe has a roasted maple neck with a rosewood fretboard, like yours. I really like your 44-01 spalted, different tonal options, very nice! My 55-02 has the nicest and lowest action, bright, fast and punchy, on a maple neck and fretboard. The 44-02 is very resonant, lots of sustain and warm tones. Love these basses.

Lakland necks are apparently fantastic, I found out within a couple minutes on my 44-02 before bringing it home.

I'll suggest that the soapbars vs the single + MM-style pickups gives you some insane versatility between the two basses; while the Bartolini MK-1 pickups get weird with long dials in either direction, their blended sound is a really great signature tone. I had some on an Ibanez SRSC805, and sold it due to neck dive issues, not the sound.

You're right, Real Soon, between the 44-01 and 44-02 there's a lot of tonal difference, I like them both for that, lots to be had between the 2. The 44-01 is lighter at 8.7lbs, the 44-02 is 9.8lbs which is about my limit for a bass. But the nice padded straps make both feel comfortable. Sweet! I almost bought one of these when I saw this post.. the main reason I've been looking at USA models is because of the stabilizing bars and quartersawn neckwood. Now with roasted maple... plus I love the rosewood boards with the big dots(aren't the dots some sort of wood...?)

On the USA models the dots are wood.

Very very very early skyline dots were wood.

Today they are plastic or some form of composite

UPDATE: Got over my GAS when I saw that 44-02 Demo I was looking at (SwtWtr) weighs 10 lbs! Fogettaboutitt!!

Isn’t it sweetwater that posts the weight of all their basses, so you can pick the lightest one? The 44-02 by design does not typically weigh a lot. The body is smaller than a P, and way smaller than a J.

Anyways, if anybody is looking for a great gig bag slash case, I’ve now bought 2 of these bad boys and they’re a bargain right now - $69.99 on sale!! My review is posted - Joe from Knoxville.

Have a great Jam Thom with your "new" bass! Let us know how it sounded!

I bought a new 44-02 deluxe last month - I couldn't believe how much heavier it was than my 2020 55-02 - not a deal breaker for me, studio use only. But I could see how the weight would be challenging if gigging. The playability and sound sold me - even though it shares the same electronics as the 55-02, it feels, plays different, sounds are familiar yet there are some noticeable nuances that are inspiring.

I think your post is inspiring, as I'm not looking for a bass to gig with. This is going to be for recording/home.

The other reason I decided not to pull the trigger on a 10-11 lb-er is that I'm getting the 44-01 (9.3 lbs...right now) in my avatar set up with new electronics. Both Bartolini MK housings, but one with a P in the neck and one with a splittable soapbar in the bridge. I think the P will end up being halfway between a standard P bass and a Gibson EB-1 (or Billy Sheehan Yamaha...) placement...? What do you guys think?

I bought one of these also. Incredible value. I'm getting away from hardshell cases
