Agree about the Audere Pre. I have a custom 4 band in my 44-01 and yes it is very transparent letting the sound of the pups shine through. EQ along with Z mode switch gives many options. Really transformed that bass to something very unique.

The bass is long gone. The guy I bought it from sold and bought it back three times before selling it to me for saying that he loved the look but didn’t get along with the sound. The guy I sold it to ended up selling it after a short period of time for similar reasons. It’s out there as I bought my 55-01 from a guy on Reverb who actually had it listed for sale also.
And yes, steels and nickels. It had a great bedroom sound when played on its own. Just didn’t play well with others. Here’s a solo ditty I used my phone to record years ago. It sounds really nice…on its own.
Wow sounds good to me. Maybe it's the type of music. When you need something to really cut use a humbucker, p pickup split or single coil works best. I'm sure you tried all you could im thinking maybe it was the type of music that maybe that bass wasn't right for.. so strange
Right?! And that's why I try to be clear and say it's not all DJ's because obviously they work (really well for a lot of people) but this one in particular was a beauty with a horrible personality.
(and a slight correction; I bought my 55-64 from the guy who was also selling the DJ-4. Not the 55-01).

...Didn't ask me, but I play the HB30 for most of the stuff in our country band. I've had, and used plenty of 5s, but I'm always drawn back the the 4. I also prefer passive EQ. Tone hammer does all the tweaking I'd ever need. If I need a low B for an ending or something like that, my octave pedal fills that very nicely.
Sorry. This is probably way more than you want so the TL : DR My white 55-60 and 55-14 because they sound and look great.
For gigs, I primarily use either my 55-60 ("Old Glory) or my 55-14 ("Sip Sip" sans Shiner decal). The guy I play with is a songwriter who loves having a lot of low notes as the foundation to the songs so I spend a lot of time down below E. And while I could use any of them for live purposes, I go with these two because they sound great and look great on stage ("Sip Sip" is one of our songs) even if the 55-60 is 11+lbs.
For recording, I've primarily used either of my 55-94's depending on the tones I'm seeking. Their fundamentals are really solid and clear and I can cop a convincing P, J, 'Ray, or Lakland sound out of them for recording. I've found I lean into the J sounding neck and split rear pickup for most of the recordings as it just sits really nice with two electrics, one acoustic, fiddle, piano/keys, and drums.
Here's a recent single of ours. I used the 2006 55-94 w/LH3 pre/pickups using the neck/split rear and you can hear how it sits amongst a fairly busy song.

Very helpful. Thanks. Nice tone on the recording, well-rounded with just a bit of bite.
I moved from 4 to 5 string bass about 10 years ago. I don’t overuse the B string but it comes in handy for odd keys, or to really add some punch.

Thanks. It's a 55-02. Got it last summer from a shop in Germany. Took a while for to get the tone dialed in for a live PW setting. But it's been worth it! B-string is much improved over other 5's I've played.

Had the joy of playing my lil ol 44-02 at the Inman Park Festival here in Atlanta a week & change ago. One of my favorite events all year so it was a real treat to finally get onstage!
Finally got to live debut the 55-02. What a machine! Along with my Darkglass Photon, it provided my core tones for the entire gig, and I've never felt more comfortable or received more compliments about my tone.
I will accept being upstaged thoroughly here lol
I did the opposite, about 10 years ago. Lol. I guess it evens-out the balance in the bass Universe.
I do love a few low extra notes every now and again, but my octave pedal tracks so well, that I really don't miss my 5s. I certainly agree that it's nearly necessary for modern gospel, but to me, it's almost a different type of instrument. Couldn't go back to all that weight for a 3-set gig! I love 6-strings too, and if I were to go big again, I'd prob want a 6.

, but one of the best parts of playing a 5 string is not having to play in first position for the low notes. I'm playing 5ers exclusively for several years now, TRY not to overuse the low D (but it sounds so good ), but it works just fine for me in my classic rock/country band. Plus the B is a great thumb rest for floating thumb

This. I mostly play on the "normal" four strings, which makes it extra special when I hit those low notes in the climax or the final part of a song. I love hearing the PA rumble when that happens

Yeah, I get it. I am eyeing the Sandberg Superlight 5s. That's about the only one that I'm still tempted to pull the trigger on, these days. 6.5lbs is remarkable!! I'd love to play one somewhere, first. But, I'm happy with my 4s.
