[Stranger Danger]

Hey, I’m looking into DI preamps. Not even sure if I need one. I have a 44-02 and a DJ-4. I can see the benefit of using a DI preamp for the passive bass, but for me 44-02, the preamp is built in. Does anyone use a DI preamp with their active Laklands?

Edit: I also have an amp. I understand the value of a DI preamp with no amp. My Fender Rumble 800 has a DI out.

I am probably in the minority, but I like to minimize gain stages whenever possible and see no value in adding a pedal preamp when you have one in the bass already. But I use an UA 1176 compressor pedal into a JDI with my active Lakland bass.

With the talk of pickguards here recently I wouldn’t mind getting one for my 55-01. But I do t see these listed on the Lakland site and Google searches don’t pull up much. What’s the best source?

There used to be a company called Jeannies that was the source for everything Lakland pickguard related. They have been gone for awhile. I am not sure who does it now.

Quick Guards

I have done both tracings and sent my originals. The latter will get you perfect results. Know that there is no 'standard' for Skyline guards so working from the original is generally preferred. I also always ordered mine undrilled to insure I got the holes in the right place but with teh original in hand they should do fine. And, in my experience, while both do very good work neither are all that fast so be patient.

And Jeannies has been long gone for a long time.

These on my 55-01s are both from Mike Quick and Quick Guards and as @nervous said, it may take a while but the quality is excellent.

My clear guard came from Quick Guards, quality is excellent, but yes, be patient. The black quard on my 44-02 was a hybrid of the standard shape guard that I ordered from Lakland that was shipped to me very quickly. Then @JEDI BASS took the 44-01 guard shape and turned the black standard shape to what is on the 44-02 now. A lot of work, but it turned out very good. Thanks again JJ!

For me I use my preamp pedal to keep in the amp realm of life. When I go ampless I have my Aguilar Tone Hammer or AG preamp pedal to give me that same amp preamp I would use when I have my full amp/cab rig with either the TH700/AG700 amps. At least that is my train of thought on approaching this. I play primarily 55-94/55-02's. Now, when I play a passive bass such as my DJ or a J bass I have a Aguilar DB925 on my board to give me the "active pre" vibe for those particular basses......again that then feeds into my "preamp/amp".

So, that is my muddy water explanation of my setup...hope it helps!

Roger Jeannie passed away about 10 years ago. I still have the pickguards I purchased from him for my 2000's era Skylines. He did good work, despite mixed reviews you'll find scattered around these forums and elsewhere.

Can’t see covering up a pretty top but I guess if you are hitting the bass somehow it’s needed? Not criticizing just trying to understand

I added a pickguard simply for aesthetics. I like how it looks on my 44-02 and makes it a little different than other 44-02s
