Lakland vs Sadowsky

Well after another revealing auditioning session at the Sadowsky shop, I decided to put my MV5 on consignment and get not one but two new NYC's! One is the 24-5 P/J that I mentioned and the other is a 24-5 with soapbars.

Very nice! That is the same duo that I hope to have fairly soon (excepting that my P/J will not have 24 frets). Very, very nice! Can't wait for the pics and the report!

One is the 24-5 P/J that I mentioned and the other is a 24-5 with soapbars. When I arrive in KC in a little over a week, they'll be waiting for me in their undisturbed shipping containers, straight from Nino! :hyper: :D
I thought this Monday would work initially but Roger ended up being out of town all this week. That kind of put a hamper on my plan of buying the basses and taking them home with me on the subway. I forgot about the tax. :rollno: Now that they'll be shipped to KC ahead of me, I won't have to worry about that pesky 8.375% and I won't have to worry about taking them on the plane! (one way at least)

Don't worry, I'll spew plenty about these basses. I've already started a draft for that thread! I'll be including my initial, in shop, impressions and then I'll follow up with my findings once I play them in a few rehearsal and performance settings. :bassist:

just out of curiosity ...why'd ya decide to get the pj and double humbuckers over the single coils? (or stacked humbuckers...whichever you had)

Sadowsky metrolines all the way man!!!!!! as much as I like the 55-94 Lakland, you got to admitt Sadowskys are awsome in every way. The only down side to them is that their too friggin expensive. Plus, Walter Becker plays Sadowsky basses and guitars for Steely Dan.

Okay, 'nother update.

I decided to keep the MV5 because I just couldn't let it go. It's a real gem. I also wanted to keep it because then I'd have one of each possible pickup config. (besides reversed-P, of course). I went there this afternoon and picked up my two new babies and took the MV5 off of consignment. I am in another world right now!

To answer your question wujuu,
When I tried them out at the shop I intentionally tried not to pay too much attention to which pickups were in which basses, at least initially. I just kept my mind open and let the bass(es) come to me...or something. With my less-than-favorable experiences with P/J's in the past I tend to steer clear of the P pickup but this one was an exception. It sounds clear and open and it possesses none of the things that I don't like about the P pickup. It has a distinctive midrange character that seems to cut a little better than the HB'ing J/J's.

I got the Modern 5-24 with soapbars because (1. I needed a mean, modern-sounding bass for some of the music I play (2. Its Morado fingerboard compliments my two other Maple-boarded Sads quite well (3. It has a tonal character quite unlike the J/J's or the P/J's and (4. I HAD to have a quilt-top Modern 5 at some point before I died! :D
The P/J is finished in Black Pearl so it's very understated. I wanted something that would compliment that, hence the trans-red quilt! I just think that the Modern 5-24 has got to be one of the sexiest basses ever. There's something about the proportions combined with the pickup locations that makes me go crazy. :hyper: :bassist:
Oh yeah, it sounds real purdy, too. :D

Ive owned both. Still have my Sadowsky(s). Its what my clients prefer. I think mainly because of the VTC option that allows me to remove all the hi's and keep the mid and lo-end rumble. Now if Lakland had VTC....................................................

Hey LJ, Check out one of these if you can still get one!!

http://www.vintagebass.com/thedudepit/showthread.php?t=16024

I got one in the mail today, stuck a set of Sadowsky Flats on it and adjusted the action to my tastes and WOW! I will never get rid of my Sadowskys but this thing growls like a pissed off pit bull...A great tool to have in the arsenal with a very good treble rolloff and it still has that deep P bass thing in spades. The Dark Star Pickup is amazing in this thing, the most responsive PUP I have ever seen!! I think Steve over at the Dudepit (and a great TBer here as well) only has a few left! I am going to add to the review over at the Pit in this same thread so look for it there....This is a really good tool to have for that Pbass vibe with a bit more versatility and REALLY great tone! Check it out...

Peace,

T
