Neat bass. It may be that Lane was inspired by a number of stringed instruments from Asia, like the yueqin, which have raised 'frets' to allow for more expressive vibrato and glissando.

This was actually an interesting instrument to play. The fat frets were "buffered" by the scalloped fretboard, and it sort of worked well. Very weird to adjust to, and definitely was not the best wearing or playing bass on the planet. I used one on stage for a show decades ago.
