Larry Hartke's 2010 Precision Bass Refinish

Gang,

Now as I reported yesterday I’m having my '59 Precision Bass refinished and restored in fine detail. But if you plant a tree you must also burn a tree...isn't that how it goes...do I have that right?

Anyway in the meantime I’ve been doing some re-finishing myself. This is a brand new Fender Precision Bass that I "refinished", signed, and dated on Labor Day weekend 2010…most people love it and want to buy it from me (I can't sell it, I like it too much), but there's also a small number of people who absolutely hate it, they recoil in anger when they see it, and they think that both I and it are a total disgrace (mostly me).

But both emotions are there and that tells me its art.

This bass is not to be confused with a relic, it's not what "might" have happened over time, it's what "did" happen...all at once!

It’s the perfect compliment to an increasingly violent and extreme world. Be sure to specify, rare, medium or well done when ordering.

i did that to a bass once because i grew to hate the color. then i stripped the finish off. i like it better without it.

I don't know #10, but I'm familiar with a #6.

At first I recoiled in horror. Then, as I peeked around the tombstone I'd hidden behind, I started to appreciate the sheer funk of the fire finish. I think I like it.

Can we hear the story behind this, Larry? Or do Statute of Limitations rules apply?
