Yep, the satin frost feels a little less slick. There's not a ton of texture to it, but it feels sort of dry in comparison to a slick gloss finish.

I am still GAS'ing for a margarita metallic G&L with the satin frost treatment. I really dig the look of it, and satin frost seems really interesting.
I like the Satin frost. I'm sure it looks better with some colors than others.
Yeah, for my personal tastes, it makes the pastel Fender colors tolerable. But for folks who like those colors, it probably just looks weird. LOL
I just added 5 new G&L orders to my site. At least 1 is pre-sold (maybe 2), but the other 3 (or 4) are looking for a home!

And while I have your attention regarding G&L, I just wanted to throw out that now is a great time to custom order a G&L bass. They are delivering basses as quickly as 4-6 weeks, which means they've cut their usual delivery time in half. I'm not sure how long this pace will last, but it has been this way since November. Quite consistently.

If it's added to the price list and they come in regularly under 8-8.5lbs, I can see this being a very popular option.
I just double checked, and it looks like some of the JB's (big bodies) and M2500's (5-string, dual pickups, active) hit 8-8.4 lbs.
Not special orders, but there are still some left on the available list that I can grab for folks. G&L Built 50 Empress instruments as a bit of an experiment, and I think they're hoping to sell through those before they decide whether to make it an official option moving forward.

I imagine these are all right-handed, unfortunately. And the Empress is a $100 MSRP upcharge.
Ooooo - the two Empress basses are here! I'll have photos up in just a little bit, I have to first get them boxed up and ready to get out the door in a few minutes...
My impression? Empress looks like a blonde Mahogany, it has that ribbon sort of figure to it. It's quite lovely. And I'd say it sounds like Ash. That could just be the maple fretboards talking, but both of these Empress/Maple L-2000's sound like Ash/Maple L-2000's to me. Not a huge low end, it's nice and even across the spectrum. And there plenty of growl there, as you'd expect with a L2K. And when you pick them up... wow. Both are just 7.4 lbs!

Here's the first of the two Empress L-2000's. You can see the strong ribbon pattern in the grain (running left to right across the body). To my eyes, this is very similar to Mahogany, although the wood is obviously much lighter in color. It's closer to Ash in that respect. You can also see a bit of the flame figuring which runs top to bottom across the ribbon. That figure is even more pronounced in person. All in all, it's a really pretty body wood.

I like it. I'd imagine a number of colors would look good on that. For me, trans red would be killer.

Good idea, Greg. I'd like to compare my hog '81 & alder '14 L1Ks with these empress bodied L2Ks.
outside of the body wood difference, I'm curious about the satin & gloss finished #12 necks on these compared to the satin #7 neck on my '14.
