Should be a nice flood of cheap rics on eBay in a few months... When you guys need to pay off the kid's christmas presents, I'll be here wit the cash
Wouldn't be quite so confident. People were flipping these things on ebay for a tidy profit, even while the sale was ongoing.
Purchase price and resale price are not always directly linked.
That's why those in need can buy my 2004 Ric in Midnight Blue. Comes with a like new TKL plush hardshell case and a matching blue suede strap with strap locks. Broken in,set up,and intonated with new strings. For sale on here right now. Why wait?
$800?A search for "Rickenbacker 4003" shows the cheapest BIN to be about $1600.

I thought about buying a few at $1100 and then selling them for $1500 next spring.
There's a few and they are around $1800-1900 BIN. There's one with a reserve that's not met for $1475 with a day and a half to go. Maybe I will, 'watch' these to see how much people are paying. LOL. These people need to pay more attention to sales. Hey, I see you are in Tennessee. I have 2 rentals in Hendersonville. One had $35K damage in the flood of May, 2010. Our tenants had 4 cars swept away by what usually is just a small creek right behind our house. They were total loses. Did you have any flood damage?
If somebody wants to sink their cash into a 4003 and flip it more power to them. The reality is that most BIN instruments on eBay sit for a long time.

I have to admit it was tempting at first to buy the 'Sale' RIC and Flip it, but being in California I have to pay sales tax, and Ebay charges 10% of the final selling cost. I tried to get MF to give me a 10% discount like many got but 3 calls got me only a $20 store credit. So I would be paying $1407. If I was lucky and sold it on Ebay for $1800 (they would have to pay for shipping too so they would be paying close to $1900) I'd make about $200 profit, so the gamble really didn't pay off for me.
I decided to buy one to keep for my enjoyment. Problem is, nobody sells them locally so I couldn't, 'Test Drive' one, and when I got it there was nothing at all wrong with the case, or the Bass. I just didn't like the neck at all. I've heard the newer ones have a much smaller neck.
After I got everything ordered I gave MF a couple of calls and talked to some nice folks there. Here are some of my bullet point notes:
- Musicians Friend is backordered and only get a certain amount of basses per year from Rickenbacker
- I'm on the backorder list at Musicians Friend for the Rickenbacker backorder list dated January 2013.
- She did say that as other folks cancel orders I could be moved up.
- I did confirm with them that they will not charge my credit card until the item is shipped.
So it's quite possible I could get it sooner either through folks cancelling or if these estimates get moved, or what-have-you...
I'm not too worried. I bought this more as a "This is a really good deal, now's a chance to get one for a good price," more than, "I have to have this bass."
I have 3 basses currently and that's plenty. Just couldn't pass up the deal. I also called them to discuss the order as the price of $1006.50 was a wicked-good price for a new Ric 4003. So far so good. I've had two phone calls with them already discussing the order, delivery, and the price. I read in the other post someone else had theirs cancelled at this price.
I hope I'm not jinxing it by writing this...
How did I get this price? I dunno. I removed the $100 off coupon that was in my basket from looking at something else a while back and then added the 15% off code, and 292.50 or so was taken off the price of the bass. In the other thread I think my reaction was HOLY MOLY! So for this price, I just couldn't pass it up. I'd like it sooner but am willing to wait if I have to at this price.
So far my experience and discussions with Musicians Friend has been fantastic. Hopefully it stays that way into 2013.
I ordered mine the Tuesday after we found out about them, also got the 15% off and on Friday had the bass in my hands for $1150 or something like that. The bass had problems (described to death in the last thread) so I sent it back for an exchange, confirming with the rep that once I initiated an exchange, one would be pulled from inventory and tagged for me. Mailed it back on Monday. Continually checked the status, they received it on Thursday, I called to confirm they got it and they said it would process the exchange on Friday. On Saturday I still hadn't gotten an email or anything, so I called again and they said for some reason it didnt process right away and would turn over on Monday, and that I'd DEFINITELY get a bass shipped to me on Monday overnighted (just in time for practice Tuesday!)
So Monday morning, check my email, and BACKORDERED! I called them up, and sure enough I was backordered til Jan 2013, with 32 people in line in front of me. I explained my whole dilemma, but their hands were tied, couldnt ship me a different color (even though all were in stock) because of the price difference. They simply said "well thats not how we do exchanges, that customer service representative shouldn't have told you that." I ended up cancelling my order out of frustration.
I got refunded, haven't lost anything from this experience, but it was a pain in the a**. I had a Ric in my hands for a weekend, but had I kept it, I would have resented its factory defects for its whole life (low action was unattainable in the neck), and the defects would hinder resale had I wanted to offload it. But Musician's Friend communication breakdown and subsequent hard-balling kinda pissed me off. Oh well. I took the ole' ATK to practice last night and forgot how much I love it.

Ebay final value fees on a bass are 10% with a maximum fee of $100.00, so the final value fee on a RIC selling for $1800.00 would be $100.00. They do charge final value fees on shipping though, which kinda sux.
