Least favorite bassist?

Sorry to say so, but I really don't like Geddy Lee.
I don't like his sound and I don't like his playing. Hell I don't even like his singing.
But I now he is really good at what he does. So this is just an opinion.
And he'll kick my ass fo'sho!

Fieldy on the other hand is not an opinion.
It's one of the basic facts of live! Everybody knows he sucks.

Flea strikes me as not being very modest or humble and that's probably what effects guys opinions ,in some cases.
I tend to find all slap playing BORING and an over done gimmick. But when Flea comes up with finger style bass lines I find them funky and groovy. Such as the song "Charlie". Also a nice smooth bass line in the song "SNOW".

Jaco can be boring for me even when he's playing some technically dificult stuff. But I'm sure he could groove like mad if he was held to it! I'd much rather listen to a Duck Dunn line than Jaco noodling.

You based your judgment of a whole race on 3 people! :eyebrow:
I said blacks because thats all I've seen playing slap at my local guitar center. The whites I've seen just play crappy "pop punk". The point was that I'm white and play bass and have been told I don't have that "soul" factor. But the whole three times I've seen black players in there; there funk was'nt smooth at all. So I guess that makes me racist? I'm the racist funk fan!

This is an interesting thread to be sure! I don't know, I can't dislike Fieldy because he doesn't make any claims at grandeour and he did at least TRY to do something different, hell...would you sooner he did endless eights sticking rigidly to a minor pentatonic or the root notes of the guitarists' chords? Not saying he's incredible by any stretch of a gnats' imagination, but give a guy a break lol. :hiding:

Gene Simmons annoys the hell out of me, and Nikki Socks..Six..Twix..whatever the heck it is. They come across as decent guys in interviews but as utter non-innovators of rock bass...yeesh. :hmm:

Guess you never listened to his work with Joni Mitchell?

I never knew the worth of a musician depended on his/her dance moves and personal hygiene. :hmm:

You won't like my response.:hiding:
Ironically, it was a Joni Mitchell era onstage solo that originally made me want scream, "Stop, I'll tell you everything!".
I just listened to the link you posted - "Talk To Me". It should be called "Shut The F*** up, Already". Between Jaco's incessant soloing/farting (AGAIN, no pocket) and Joni's incessant babbling nonsense... well, it's one I won't soon forget.

Regarding appearance and stage presence - it's part of a performance, and part of entertaining. Jaco was not good at all in that department. Sorry... and I mean that.

Whatever dude. I've always found it to be a sublime application of melodic grooving. There is a pocket, and he's in it, you just don't seem to be able to understand it, as you made clear with your insulting and self-absorbed remarks.

Not everyone is glistening, polished and shiney with a smile. Yes, in a schmaltzy skin-deep show biz way image and stage dance moves matter (part of the "package" doncha know), but sound is what matters. Unless of course you are saying that Britney Spears is the ultimate performer because she looks good, appears clean and has good stage presence.:rollno:

Before musicians were so carefully packaged, people with talent, who may not have been the best lookers or even nice smelling, were recognized for their talent. Was Charles Mingus pretty? Did he dance well? Was Miles hopping all over the stage and "entertaining" us? Monk had real OCD problems, Billie Holiday was once a hooker and had substance issues, Coltane, Bird, these are just the jazz guys. I guess they all sucked and clearly missed the mark.

Just so I can be enlightened, since my choice of music is obviously misguided will you please share what is your idea of bass perfection? Or perhaps you can share your work with us which must clearly be so much better than the lyrics of Mitchell or the awful playing of Jaco.

:hmm:
Then who is?

Jaco stalked the stage - the audience always knew where he was.

How many other bass players outside of big dumb rock bassists had the pure energy on stage of Jaco?

Or maybe what you're saying is you don't like the guys look?

That's cool - but how in the world can you say he had no stage presence?

The guy threw his basses up in the air, danced around, stalked the stage....he was a maniac, literally.

If this isn't stage presence - then why the crowd is in the palm of his hands?:

The guy is strutting around, he slings his bass around, he steps forward so the crowd can see what he's doing, then he disappears backstage while the crowd goes nuts. Like I said, how many other bassists could have a whole crowd in the palm of their hands the way Jaco did?

So it seems that you saying Jaco was not entertaining is drowned out by the thousands of cheering audience members that were quite clearly being entertained by Jaco.

I dont think he dropped the bass. It sounds like the wireless unit on the strap hitting the body in mid air. If it dropped on the floor, it would have made much louder noise than just 'clang'.
Here's another - yeah, he's disheveled but he's going nuts on that stage, and at the end he destroys his bass while the crowd goes NUTS. If that isn't stage presence, I'd like you to show me what is:

First of all, this is a thread called "least favorite bassist". As such, opinion both supporting and dissenting, is invited, and welcomed. Had you not posted the links, I would have had nothing to respond to, so what's up with that? You are free to disagree - you certainly wouldn't be the first person to disagree with me about Jaco, who truly is MY least favorite bassist. Who I do like and the type of music I personally play is immaterial here. I think it's safe to say that we don't have the same taste, which is just fine and dandy. Read my earlier posts in this thread, I think I clarified my position early on.

The problem with these kinds of threads is that they tend to alienate bassists. Not a terribly inclusive approach to handling one's self on what is supposed to be a nurturing, open environment for bassists of all calibers to come together and share a wide range of ideas, perspectives, and concepts. Whether your favorite bassist is Jaco or Chris Squire, they both deserve every bassist's respect at the very least.

I could, but won't, give you a long list of well known bassists who take the "Gird your loins" approach to haunting here. Granted, being in the public eye/ear has it's foibles, but that shouldn't give the public free reign to indiscriminately speak their minds in what ever unedited form they wish and then expect to still have easy access to players who, but for this site, might be inaccessible. These people read these threads. And many of them are VERY hurt by them. There was a thread that came out right after the BP 6 string feature issue, bashing a well known bassist. He read it, which turned out to be an emotional mistake for him.

It's all just OPINION. Maybe you're just Joe Blow in the bar band and you don't think your opinion really matters anyway...but it does when it's out there for the world to see. It shouldn't mean much on one hand...but on the other hand, why go public with it just to run your mouth knowing that you could be doing real harm? It could be surmised that an intelligent person who wants to dredge up this kind of negativity in a public forum is proactively trying to inflict pain on people of whom they have an image that's probably totally false anyway. So the only real goal is hurting people. I hope that's not true.

Just to clarify, EVERYTHING YOU SAY HERE MIGHT BE HEARD BY SOMEONE YOU WOULDN'T THINK WOULD HEAR IT. We're in the internet age, and while well known players are easier to reach, up and comers or less-known players trying to avail themselves of the opportunity to communicate with the ones they LIKE should give consideration to the ones they don't and be careful of the manner in which they express their opinions of them...valid as those opinions are.

If you don't have something nice (or helpful) to say, don't say anything. I learned that when I was 3.

+1

I don't understand why TB allows these kinds of threads because they serve no constructive purpose and can be very hurtful. I would expect to hear this kind of thoughtless criticism on an elementary school's playground; but from adults on a public forum?

Yep. It's all warm and fuzzy. Heaven forbid people learned to toughen up and accept that the entire world doesn't absolutely LOVE their work. That's something I learned when I was 3.

To paraphrase Robert Burns, we never really get to "see ourselves the way others see us" - especially when there are those who would shield us from negative comments because of our "frail psyche". We all have days when we are great (or think so) - and days when we all suck wind (or think so). The audience may not always agree, in either case. Take the criticism for what it is - an opinion - and move on.

Totally missing the point. Because you have every right to speak your mind doesn't mean you should. There's a level of sophistication in ones behavior that helps to keep society growing and moving forward. I know not everyone possesses it. You're entitled to whatever level of crassness you deem appropriate. Every accomplished musician understands that his market is a narrow niche...much narrower than the scope of the readers here. It makes sense that any given player will only appeal to a percentage of the readers.

I'll be the guy to offer MY informed opinion in a reasonable way, and you can be the guy who points out people's weaknesses in the name of helping them be aware of what might make them more appealing to a wider audience. That's your right. I just happen to think that if you live in the real world, there's plenty of bitter reality for those who are remotely honest with themselves. You should just pity the ones who are delusional. Or ENVY them. I wish I thought I was the best bass player in the world. I'd be a lot happier.

Probably nobody on a forum ever distanced me from checking out or enjoying an artist, band or gear - but some people have attracted me to checking out an artist, band or gear. Mainly what those expressing in a negative and hateful way have done is shaped my opinion of them who choose to roll that way, however.

Good thing for those who concentrate on the positive, because over many years its opened my ears.
