Leland Sklar with Lyle Lovett

Not only one of the best studio/live bassists in existence, but also one of the REAL nicest guys you can imagine, with total humility.

He "graced" me with about a 5-minute audience at a NAMM a few back, and who am I?? Nobody!
But that's not what he said- Both he and Phil Chen that day told me in no uncertain terms to be proud of what I do, after I gushed about how both of them played. When I told Phil I was "no Phil Chen" he said "And I'm not you!!"

Lee told me how he began training classically very young, so his evolving into the great bassist he is today just "came naturally".

That was a day to remember.

I wanted to go to this show, but I just had my hip replaced and a 4+ hour drive just wasn't in the cards. I hope to catch Sklar at some point with someone.

Lyle will be performing at the Old Town School of Folk Music's "Blue Jean Gala" fundraiser on 9/21; there's no other info as to who might be accompanying him. While I'm a member of OTSofFM the *cheapest* ticket is $500 and they range all the way up to a $75K sponsorship level. As this seating policy "Seats will be assigned based on level of support, date of purchase, and size of group" means even if I could afford to spring for the 5 bills I'd probably be handing out towels in the men's room I'll be passing. I'll remain content to continue with my modest annual membership contribution and allow the swells to kick in the big bucks and score the benefits; its a fair trade IMO. Do wish the Lyle & Lee show was making an appearance nearby at a more approachable price point.

I got to see Leland Sklar playing with Lyle Lovett and His Large Band last night at the State Theatre in Minneapolis. Oh, and that's Russ Kunkel (!) on the drums. It was a great show and just a thrill to see these legends in person.

After the show, Leland was at the merch table signing copies of his book, "Everybody Loves Me". I had a brief chat with him. He seems like a genuinely nice guy who loves his job. He said (paraphrasing) "I love playing with these kids" and "Playing the shows is a joy; they pay me to get on the bus afterwards."
