Agreed, I have long arms and huge hands/feet so I like larger/wider instruments. It is just personal preference.

Just go all the way, tune a cello EADG, do whatever you want. But maybe there are reasons a 3/4 bass sounds different than a cello. Reasons that string technology can’t make up for.

For me, a 5-string is easier. I don’t like extensions and reaching up above my head. I’d rather reach across and grab a lower string.

I've noticed in conversations with a lot of people, when they learn that I play bass, they assume that the bass is a problem waiting to be solved with technology. And I end up admitting that I really don't have a cogent explanation for why I play this thing, I just do, and I love it. I also play electric bass and some cello.

Of course there are logistical issues, but they're pretty minimal in the region where I play. Any instrument is going to require a car, due to distance and not the size of the instrument. Public transportation is insufficient to be a realistic possibility.

Perhaps if pressed, I'll be forced to admit that the sheer absurdity of the bass is one of its attractions.

Your post doesn't make any sense and is devoid of any supporting fact.

Your complete posting history here at Talkbass is two threads; one stating that you are sad that you can't find a 1/4 or 1/2 size 5-string and this one saying that larger sizes are un-necessary because of ...string technology?

Of course since children's sized 5 strings don't exist, then it stands to reason that no one makes 5-string sets for children's sized basses, so I'm not sure what you're basing that claim on.

And since your profile is empty, we don't know anything about you, including whether or not you actually own and play a double bass or if you are a 5 string BG player frustrated because DBs aren't what you want them to be.

I'm somewhat inclined to support Don's theory. Procede with caution.
