Let's Build a Emerald Balor 6!!!

I was able to meet Alistair Hay at the Emerald USA store opening last Saturday (August 16, 2025). We spoke for about five minutes. My immediate impression is that he is a kind and genuine human. I gained some insights on the new build process for the Balor line and why our order timeline was extended. It will be well worth the wait.
Alistair expressed his apologies and thanked those of us with Balors on order (not just Balor 6s) for our tremendous patience.
Most of all, I witnessed what an amazing company Emerald has become in the past year. The instruments from the new factory have leveled up the quality. The tops were of gem-like luster and I couldn't find a build flaw in the instruments I picked up. It was amazing to see so many Emeralds at once. I think we will all be happy that our Balors came from the new factory.

MOST IMPORTANTLY and sorry to spoil the surprise for those who haven't gotten it yet, but I just today received an automated factory production email that the two Balor 6s I have on order have entered the mold phase. The next update should be in two to three weeks. This is true light at the end of the tunnel.

Good news! I have to admit, I've been getting pretty antsy, since it's been about a year and a half since we put in our orders.

I haven't gotten my factory production email yet, though....:(

Here's a message that Ben received from Caolan. Not sure why other's haven't received the automated molding message. All basses on this order should be hatched by the end of this week/ start of next.

"I think instead of them all being molded at once, they've been molded based on specs. They're moving through in batches ..."

I might be reading too much into that sentence, but it suggests to me that the factory doing the carbon fiber layup builds stuff for several companies, not just Baylor...and probably not just musical instruments. Contract fabricators tend to do a production run of X units at a time (even if the order is for >X) so that they can keep on schedule for all the other items they're building that require different molds, different layup schedules, different tooling, and different skill sets.

They are a dedicated maker of carbon fiber acoustic guitars, acoustic bass guitars, and harp ukuleles. They operate much more like an old world crafting guild rather thank the US and Chinese mass production model. Recently, they have started using more batch production rather than job production.
Their process does involve different layering thicknesses for the tops, but all are hand-laid in-house. The staggering is for in-house procedures. Starts with the most efficient use of cuts of the size of the carbon fiber roll and wood veneer. Then batching for the limited space for the kiln bake, batching for fretboard fabrication including inlays, batching for color and different finishes, batching for fretting, polishing, PLEK, etc. If it can be made in-house, it is. They even CNC their own bridges. They outsource tuning machines, pickups, bridge saddles, nuts, fretwire, veneer rolls, carbon fiber rolls and thick flatstock...and the ceramic mugs shipped with each instrument.
They offer factory tours. You can also check out most of their processes on their YouTube channel.

Info from Caolan as to why everyone hasn't gotten the automated message:

"I think instead of them all being molded at once, they've been molded based on specs. They're moving through in batches, but should catch up through their factory journey and all be done at once.
There should be a great shipping video with the whole lot I'd imagine!
Thanks,
Caolan"
It's been long wait! I just found out that there's an extra complication with mine. The claro walnut veneer I picked out over a year ago apparently threw up problems when it was time for cutting, so I have to pick another one. Caolan did find an alternative that looked nice, but I just have to verify.

Sorry to hear that! Walnut loves to dry out, but man it's beautiful on Balors.
Hopefully they gave you half price on the new top since they're running the the 50% off veneers this month.

Any updates on everybody's Balor 6 string bass orders considering it's 11/16/2025?
Can't speak for anyone else, but I've heard nothing further on mine, except that all these orders take "a little more time" than the normal ones. I have to admit, I'm feeling a little frustrated. It's been something like 21 months since we put in our orders, and I've been hearing the "just a little longer" song for quite a while now, at least since last fall. I can't help feeling a bit like these orders get pushed to the back burner whenever a new initiative (e.g., the basic black line, the US store) comes up. I have no doubt that the instruments will be excellent once they're completed, but I honestly feel they shouldn't have taken this long. Though it's possible there are some other issues that we're not privy to. Maybe there are some "teething" issues with the new process of manufacturing all the Balors. Come to think of it, I don't recall seeing any Balors at all in the shipping videos in recent weeks, maybe months.

I am 100% with you about the "just a little longer" updates. I haven't been sharing much of the info I've been receiving because it's all been more of "just a little longer". I didn't think it would be helpful and merely add to everyone's frustration.

About two weeks ago was my last update. One of the players waiting got a response from Caolan stating the entire lot of first run Balor 6s are currently "in with the custom shop guys". So, another "just a little longer" update. At least, the instruments do exist now.

We HAVE indeed been getting bumped. They just haven't confirmed it in writing although I had a conversation confirming it. There have been geniune issues. One was when several of Emerald's USA bulk shipments were held at customs and then rejected and returned to Ireland. Nothing could get into the USA and some customers were livid. They stopped all progress on custom orders for a month or so and focused on building up stock while they found a shipping broker who could "fix" the import issue we've caused here. That moved us into several of the Opus line promotions, so bumped the Balors to role out those. Strategically, they only do one "new" promotion at a time. Now we're in the Black Friday promotion, so we're probably bumped.

Many people are waiting on non-6 string Balors as well. There have only been a few Balors produced since we first placed the Balor 6 order. Some were produced with the old method. However, there is currently a green Balor in the stock section on their site that might very well be a new production method bass. Just a guess.

That's all I've got for info. I sympathize with everyone's frustration and anticipation while our patience is, at this point, being ill-treated. I feel it, too.
I appreciate everyone who is taking part in this. I double appreciate the folks who haven't sent me angry messages about these basses. In meantime, I encourage everyone to reach out to Caolan to relay any frustrations and dissatifaction they might have. He can field all questions and concerns. I will reach out to Caolan after I post this and relay any new updates I might receive.

Richard is right, these orders will definitely be fulfilled and they will be excellent. Emerald can be trusted with that. It has been way, way, way too long.

I received a reply from Caolan. Here are his words:

"Alistair is over in FL in the minute, I'm chasing the custom team for any updates, but ultimately Alistair is the man I need to speak to. Once he's back I'll try get him to reach out in the group again with an update.
I understand the frustration, and I appreciate I'm giving you a bit of an update without an update, but as it's outside of the normal production system, I also have to wait for any updates.
Thanks for the patience,
Caolan"

So maybe a communication from Alistair after Thanksgiving. I can appreciate Caolan's position since I worked a customer relations position with a music gear company that was experiencing supply chain issues. I do encourage contacting him if you have concerns. He may not be able to give an answer, but he can show Alistair how many customers are growing dissatisfied with the wait.
