Lets Buy A Wish Part II

I have already ordered the model you show. The Stude. I live in Charlotte.
b9_12_sb.jpg

This guy is for real. I don't know why everyone wants to make fun of his stuff. I expect my custom order to be completed in 6 weeks. I'm going to go to his shop and pick it up. I ordered it white so I can do the finish myself. I thought the recording of the bass you bough earlier sounded pretty good.

We make fun of his stuff because we all tried the one example we bought and shipped around.

The one we got was VERY poorly made. Horrible routing on the pickups (he actually routed them backwards, then flipped em over and rereouted new holes with the old ones still in place. The headstock cutout was not even in the least. The control plate is flat, yet was put on a slightly rounded body, so parts of it kinda stick up and you could actually hurt yourself on it. Nails were used as position markers, are in the wrong places, are not even at all (up, down, up, down), some through the FB, some through the FB and part of the neck, some just on the neck. The 3 octave neck makes it VERY uncomfortable to play with little room to get under the strings, not to mention the notes up there sound dead and lifeless. The finish was horrible, but I guess you knew that ordering yours white.

It has some good points, in that I think it sounded ok, needs more bottom end though. The design is kinda cool if your into that kinda thing. Its a solid construction as far as I dont think it will ever break.

With all the other flaws though, this bass we purchased and are shipping around would be hard to even get to a very playable state in my opinion of course. Anyhow, our opinions are based on the one instrument of his, which was poor, which we experienced.

Have you ever seen one of his basses in the flesh? Have you played one?

I have, since I was #2 on the "Buy a Wish II" list. Dig back thru this posting to page 10 and you'll find my review. Summary: horrific cosmetics, bad woodworking, hum in the signal, wavy neck with no way to adjust it, poor tone w/o any bottom end, etc.

There are many better basses out there at the same price point.

As was the Wishbass that was in the first "Let's Buy A Wish" thread, which I had in my posession for about a month or two.

You can make nearly any bass sound pretty good if you drop an okay pickup in there-that's not hard. Playability is a far more important feature though, which the Wish lacked in spades...

I have talked to numerous Wish owners... with many diferent styles of wish basses. Everyone said they didn't like the finish but really liked the sound (that's why I bought mine white). He's a fun guy who sells his stuff cheap. I have no intention of playing a gig with mine, I just wanted a fretless that was unique on the cheap (heck, I'd be happy to never play a gig again...lol).

However, I have spent 35 years playing unique bass guitars. Heck, my current bass is 40 years old. If you buy from EBAY, you have no idea what your getting... probably just left-overs or basses that people ordered and never picked up. I have been in contact with wish from the beginning and will pick it up at his shop. Any problem and I'll have it taken care of right there. Maybe he was onto you and sent you guys a piece of crap for $200. He's pretty Internet savy.

Anyway, I like the guy and his instruments. He does his own thing. I hope ya'll buy his "The Stude" model and buy it directly from him and not ebay. Talk to him about what you want. I think you'll do well.

Peace

Hollowbody, if you had read the whole thread, from the start, you would have found out that one of our members dealt with Wish directly, told him that the bass was going to be passed around the country and reviewed on this forum, and picked up the bass in person the week that it was finished. So this wasn't 'some leftover' that 'somebody didn't pay for'.

I just sent Wish an email. I will post the email on this site when I get home. I think we could use some advise on how to set-up the paypal account (I have business account). I really think we need some discussion on how to make it work with the forwarding of the bass. I don't want to have to go the route of deposit or anything - I think we can come up with something. We need about 20 interested people to fund the purchase (at 10 bucks a piece) remember it will cost an additional 10 bucks to ship to the next person. Any ideas?
Thanks,
-c

WHY ON EARTH! would he send a POS bass to be reviewed. The people involved were upfront and told him what they were doing. Before the "Lets buy a wish" threads his reputation was bad enough. Why would he want to further tarnish it by letting people review a crappy bass. This fourm is viewed by a lot of people and if he's internet savy in the least he would have either made a bass like he would for the consumer so people could get an accurate view at his product or if he was "on to us" as you put he he might have put every resource into making the finest bass possible. What the forum got was a bass that was reviewd and turned out to be awful. I hope your experience with a wishbass is better as his products appear to be getting better but you're making some pretty strange and outragious comments. The forum was honest and upfront in it's intensions and we are (hopefully) not trying to attack him personally but he does or at least has put out some very shoddy basses.

I wouldn't presume to attack Wish personally. I think he's actually a pretty cool guy- someone I could conceivably sit down and have a beer with, hang out and whatnot (although out of range of sharp implements and wood ;) )...that said, his level of craftsmanship leaves a lot to be desired. In my opinion, he has some unique body shapes that border on cool, his headstock design is ugly, though unique, and his choice of pickups and hardware are suspect. He probably operates on a shoestring budget, and got too popular before he developed his design into something usable. I'm not going to knock him for trying to make a living building basses with his hands, but he's obviously taken the quantity over quality method. I seriously doubt he's ever apprenticed under any luthier, or even cabinetmaker. His finishes just plain suck. And what is setup, anyway? He'd probably do better if he'd settle down and learn the basics of setup, use real hardware bridges, and forget the cheap Corian bridge. And learn to shield. He probably got caught up in the order taking and production aspects of his business, rather than being a quality-control freak. Quality will win you better customers than quickness in the luthierie game every time. I don't think he sucks, or his ideas suck, they're just underdeveloped, and I think he's overextended. All just my opinion, of course.

Sorry to but into this thread but I will anyway just because. Wish makes a $200 hand made bass that is a bit rough but gererally sounds pretty good. I own one as well as about 10 other basses. For $200 it would be hard to buy a better sounding bass. Forget the markers, fit and finsh and listen to the bass. Intonation on a fretless is with your fingers and your ear. I can't move the adjustable saddles on my double bass, you just get what you get. My Wish bass sits next to my computer, out of the case (No case for the Wish) and I play it while I read on the net. If it falls over, so what, do you think I would notice a ding or scratch? It looks like it was carved with a hatchet! Don't try to make the bass something it is not. It is not like my Alembic, it is a Wish and does a very good job of being a Wish. A K-Mart bass would not get nearly as good of reviews as what you have given this bass but not cost much different. I just think you are being a bit hard on the old girl. :spit:

Not at all. I get about an extra 5 hours of playing time per week because of my Wish bass. Think about it, you play what is easy to get to, my wish bass is where I sit and type this crap. I may have as many hours on this bass as any I own (in the last two years) just due to convenience. I don't think I have plugged it in within the last year. Its not bad acoustically.

One thing my dad used to tell me...

If you need a review don't talk to the guy that owns it, talk to the guy that doesn't own it.

People who own things ALWAYS enhance their view or leave out issues because they don't want to seem like they were had.

Talk to everyone who has played a wish, knows what it costs, and chose not to buy one. Those are the guys with the correct reviews.

I would have to disagree. Some things you have to live with for a while to see the benefit. I hated my Alembic Series I when I first received it. I thought the tone sucked. It took me over a month to figure out its secrets and dial in some slammin' tones. Right out of the case I thought it was the worst bass purchase mistake I had ever made. Like I said, a Wish bass is just that, nothing more. It is not God's gift to the bass world.

I agree. I had a Tobias Growler which was the worst bass I've ever owned. I bought it sight un-seen, used, and I got screwed. I admit it. I'd rather be open about my f-ups so that someone else gets educated about the bass rather than sugar coat it and have someone possibly make the same mistake.

A friend and I were talking about the Wish bass last week at a gig and the bassist for the other band over heard us talking and said he ordered a 5 string Wish for $600 and couldn't wait to receive it. He was going on and on about how great and inexpensive they are. I didn't want to burst his bubble, so I just didn't say anything. Maybe his will be a nice bass, who knows. Sounds like Wish basses are hit or miss.

I thought everyone was knocking the Wish because a lot of cats on this board have really nice basses, so I was optimistic. But after I played that thing for 5 minutes, I was ready to ship it to the next person. I'm glad I didn't spend $250 on it, only $10.

Personally, I'd save another $200 and get a Dean fretless or MIM Fender fretless to play. But to each their own.

You have to consider that some of us own a mix of basses, inexpensive and up.

I own one bass that lists for $4000, another that lists for $3800, and another that lists for $2899.

So it seems that I might be automotically biased against the Wish.

I also own a $99 SX P bass copy. That is a kickin' little bass. I play it a fair amount. When I bought it, it needed a setup, and needed the frets dressed. Once I did that, it became a player. The intonation is spot on, and I have the action set up stupid low. This bass is a hotrod! The finish isn't 100% perfect, but it is 1000 times better than the Wish in this review. And the bass sounds like it should, like a P bass. And plays like a dream.

I can appreciate cheap basses, if they are a good value.

If my SX cost $250, and the Wish was $99, the SX would still be a lot better value than the Wish.
