In 1990, Gretsch briefly considered releasing a Lime Green Falcon and a Neon Pink Penguin for the hair metal market, but only prototypes were finished before they realized that hair metal wasn't going to be popular much longer.
Leo Fender made 15 prototypes of his first electric bass. Prototype "A" was a complete failure as were prototypes B and C but by prototype D the bass started to take shape. Leo, always the perfectionist continued to fine tune his design all the way through prototype "O" where he finally felt the bass was nearly ready to market. He made one last change and dubed it the "P" bass. The rest is history.
The 300 dollar washtub bass sounds every bit as good as the 3000 dollar boutique washtub bass. Even though the 300 dollar washtub bass uses cheap tubs made in Indonesia.

Roundwound string will get you a brighter sound on both.
Flats will give you more old school thud.
The industry standard is the P-bass wash-tub bass....which has a single pickup halfway up the support pole.
If you have an active wash-tub bass, the battery can usually be found inside the washtub in it's own compartment and the EQ knobs are on the outside of the tub near the rim.
Nowadays you can get a 5-string washtub bass.........fretless of course....but it's better to start out on a beginner single-string until you get the hang of it.

A trumpet mute, like any other horn mute will work for an electric bass guitar but it has to fit the upper or lower horn properly.
