Weak bassists blame their gear for their failures. Strong bassists never blame their gear - we're strong enough to carry really heavy amps and bring several basses to a gig.
It may not look like it but, The typical "B" string on a five string bass set weighs anywhere from 1 to 2 pounds. Thus, its not uncommon to see 5 string basses weighing 10 pounds or more vs an otherwise identical 4 string model weighing in at around 8 pounds.
Using a shim to adjust the action on your bolt on neck bass is very common. But what about those pesky neck through basses? Well, they actually use the exact same concept but at the opposite end of the neck. The proper way to shim a neck through bass is to slip the shim under the nut.
Here's how...
Loosen the strings, then use a 2" wide wood chisel and small sledge hammer to separate the nut from the neck. Of course you'll want a good clean separation so don't give tiny little taps with the hammer, try to use one single firm blow and it will pop off nicely. Once off you can use super glue to adhere a slice of credit card where the nut used to be and then super glue the nut on top of the credit card shim and restring your bass. That's it!

If your bass has no frets or is fan fretted, you are better than any other bassist.

Walk over to a bass that interests you and sniff the fret board if it smells like freshly cut grass that is the bass for you. Why you ask because great basses fret boards retain there fresh grass smell. Fake rosewood or maple or even plastic material doesn't ever give off this scent. You are welcome

Un tapped market. A unusual market has just appeared in the world of guitar manufacturing the use of Snake bones as nut and bridge material. This idea was brought about when a local guitar and bass builder lost his loving pet to the ever increasing problem of large snakes in his home state of Florida. He had appeared on Shark Tank and has been offered a partnership with Mark Cuban who knows a good thing when he hears it. Cuban has offered to hire a team of snake hunters to clean up Florida and get the eco system back on track and at the same time make a boat load of money!
