The piano was originally engineered by French mercenaries, to be a mobile fortress, during the War of the Roses, hence the name, now shortened to piano forte.
It was a complete failure and the design was soon scrapped although the wire bracing that once provided a shield for the driver and crew, proved to have definite musical potential when struck, under tension.
Designers of early tanks owe a huge debt to those intrepid, marauding Frenchmen who first showed us the way with the armored piano fort. And, of course, then there's all the glorious music.
