Here is a kick in the butt Google maps did a lookup for Fender Custom shop and this was the results made in the US my butt

Fretless basses were invented by beatniks in 1958. Just so they could be different from mainstream society.

You didn't have to know how to play bass....so it didn't matter what note you played on the neck or where on the neck you played it.

It was just freeform stream-of -consciousness jazz back up to someone doing spoken-word poetry.

Jack Kerouac made public his admiration for the fretless.....but it was discovered later that in secret he listened to The Crewcuts..his favorite group.
