The bigger problem with the octobass was the tonal range. The highest note it could produce was A(0), so very little of the music produced on it was audible. In college level music courses, students would be tested with an oscilloscope as the professors could not hear the music being played.
For this reason, many elephants choose to study & later teach octobass.

Nobody takes elephant music seriously. Just a lot of trumpets blowing and the dancing is just stomping around.
