Let's spread some musical misinformation

Back in the 50s before Edison invented amplification, here's how folks would enjoy a concert; drummer would set up at the back of the stage, the guitarist and bass player would rest their solid body instruments on a plank of Oak that extended fully into the audience. Ideally it was a 2"X16"X as long as possible. The audience members would sit facing the stage in 2 single rows on either side of the plank (back then called the soundboard). When the show started the patrons would tilt their heads to come in contact with the board, which resonated notes from the players. It was an imperfect system, but common practice from when Les Paul Jones invented the solid body in 1774, or 5. One day Edison, who had an ear infection from a swim over at Shattin Pond, was just in too much pain to tilt his head for the duration of that performance, decided to skip out and fiddle about with winding up what turned out to be the first pickup! Rock~N~Roll was born that day and Ol' Ampy, as he was affectionately called thereafter, earned his place in the annals of music history!

The plank is how guitarists got called "plank spankers" as after long solos they would hit the plank people had their ears against to jolt everyone awake again.

The trussrod of a bass controls sustain.

More specifically, it reduces sustain. Without a trussrod, a note would last up to an hour, creating the problem that, after the set, you still need to stand there for up to an hour until the last note decays.

The amount of audio decay is directly related to the truss rod's radioactive decay rate. Air (a nitrogen truss rod) is better than lead, but produces far less decay than uranium.

Plus, the tighter the trussrod, the more effort it takes to get a note out of that bass. The mechanical energy of the string vibration will then be converted to heat and gamma rays.

Further on the trussrod, it also is used as an antenna for wireless stage systems.

Oh, sure, that is what the gubbermint wants you to believe. It is an antenna for communication with the aliens that control the lizards that operate the world government with the consent of the illuminati. Flat wound strings counter the antenna and this is the real reason that you should play with flats.

Do your part by wearing the right hat on stage.
